Republicans Introduce Budget Plan

Maybe republicans hope the third time is the charm when it comes to property tax relief.

Republicans held a news conference Thursday afternoon to show off their version of the budget.

Highlights included a three year property tax freeze, a one cent cut in the gas tax, and a reduction in taxes on social security benefits.

The budget increases the amount going to K–12 education by $450 million, but that's still well below the 600 million Governor Doyle wanted to give schools.

Republicans are very proud of their budget.

"We will freeze property taxes for three years. We will cut taxes on social security benefits in Wisconsin, and we will cut the gas tax," says Assembly speaker John Gard.

But a spokesman for the Madison school district says it will hurt education.

"What this means is that the current the budget crisis we just got through–cutting $8.6 million dollars–it's going to be millions more the next go around," says Joe Quick, spokesman for the Madison Metropolitan School District.
