UW-Madison Administrator on Paid Leave During Investigation

The University of Wisconsin-Madison put an embattled administrator on paid leave today as officials investigate allegations of misconduct during his tenure.

Chancellor John Wiley says he's received new allegations against Paul Barrows during his tenure as vice chancellor for student affairs.

Wiley would not elaborate, but says the investigation will determine whether additional disciplinary action is warranted.

Wiley's comments come after Republican lawmakers and Democratic Governor Jim Doyle had stepped up criticism of the university's handling of Barrows' employment.

Barrows stepped down from his position in November, partly at the request of Wiley, who was angered over Barrows' relationship with a graduate student.

Barrows went on paid leave to deal with stress and "changing family circumstances" but continued to collect his almost $200,000 salary for seven months.

Earlier this month, lawmakers were outraged when they learned Barrows became a finalist for a position at the University of Texas while he was still on paid leave.
