Madison Tornado: One Year Later

Video will be available shortly.

Exactly one year ago, residents of a west side Madison neighborhood were cleaning up, after a tornado touched down near their homes.

Thursday night, Midvale Heights neighbors came together as survivors of one of the city's largest natural disasters.

On June 23rd, 2004, a tornado downed trees, damaged homes, and left hundreds of people without power for days.

Thursday night, the victims gathered at Segoe Park to share their experiences, photographs, and remember the event that changed their lives.

The F–1 tornado may have changed how the neighborhood looks on the outside, but according to residents, the community is stronger than ever.

"We survived something together. It really bonded us together, and we're celebrating that tonight. It's truly the strength and determination of neighbors," says event organizer Craig Robida.

"We feel very fortunate and as you can see from the gathering here I think the storm really increased the sense of community in our neighborhood," says neighborhood resident Charlie Bunge.

Residents admit the gathering was bittersweet, but say they are thankful that no lives were lost in the storm.
