Area lake enthusiasts are urging other area residents to take a stake in the lakes.
This weekend kicks off the Take a Stake in the Lakes Annual Volunteer Shoreline Cleanup. Volunteers are working on lakes Mendota, Wingra and Kegonsa as part of Dane County Lakes and Watershed Commission's Yahara Lakes Week.
Meanwhile Rhea Stangel-Maier, Volunteer Coordinator for Take a Stake in the Lakes says the event doesn't simply help the county's water ways look better it also represents an effort to educate residents. "Its really important that the public realize that their lives affect the lakes. And that when the trash that we drop can somehow get on the lakes and pollute, as well as our waste and things that are not supposed to go into the lakes."
