Madison Ban Going up in Smoke?

Madison is one week away from going smoke free. But the state is one step closer to its version of a smoking ban.

The state Assembly passed a bill Thursday night that bans smoking in dining areas of restaurants. But it allows people to light up in bars, taverns and bowling alleys.

The bill is designed to pre-empt local bans, such as Madison's. The city's ordinance banning smoking in bars and restaurants takes effect July First.

The mayor supports smoke free and has testified against the state legislation.

"Madison isn't like every other corner of the state," says Janet Piraino, Mayor Dave Cieslewicz's chief of Staff. "So both from reasons supporting smoke–free, this really should be our decision."

A spokesperson for Gov. Jim Doyle says the governor is inclined to veto the bill.

She says he thinks it is a step backward for local communities that have come up with stronger measures.
