A Marine from Antigo has died supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The Department of Defense says Lance Corporal John Mattek Junior
died Monday from wounds received in an explosion during combat in Al
Anbar Province, Iraq on June eighth.
Mattek's last Wisconsin address was in Stevens Point where he
attended the university before joining the Marines. His sister, Jill, of Deerbrook, says her brother graduated from Antigo High School.
Principal Tom Zamzow says Mattek was a good student who played
football and wrestled and graduated in 1999. Zamzow coached Mattek when he was eighth-grade quarterback at the middle school. Zamzow says even then, Mattek was a leader, a
motivator and a good example to the rest of the team.
Mattek was assigned to the Second Marine Division's combat team
based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
He is the 39th soldier or Marine from Wisconsin that has been
killed in Iraq.
