A number of state lawmakers are pushing a bill in effort to prevent a form of child abuse that leads to brain damage and even death.

The Prevent Violence Against Children Act will promote prevention of Shaken Baby Syndrome. It results when a parent or caregiver violently shakes or throws an infant.

With lifetime healthcare costs estimated at $1 million, Shaken Baby Syndrome is not only devastating, but expensive.

"This figure does not include costs for family sick leave or mental health care for the victim's family members," says bill sponsor Sen. Julie Lassa.

The proposal would require that all new parents receive information and view a video tape on Shaken Baby Syndrome prevention.

It would also include prevention education in school districts. Each year in Wisconsin alone around 50 babies are known to be victims of Shaken Baby Syndrome.
