Juneteenth Celebration

People in Madison gather for Juneteenth, an event to recognize the end of slavery in the U.S.

At Penn Park this year, people sampled food, browsed tents and got to celebrate African American culture.

Madison has celebrated Juneteenth since 1990, but the day's significance dates back to 1865. One June 19th of that year news of the emancipation proclamation reached people in Galveston, Texas.

Lilada Gee from Nehemiah Community Corporation says in many cities celebrations for Juneteenth are only attended by black people. Here in Madison, even though it's a celebration of black history, people of every race show up to take part.

The Nehemiah Corporation sponsors the Juneteenth celebration in Madison.

Juneteenth takes place in communities across the country.
