Shooting Death Investigation Continues

The investigation continues into the shooting death of a 17 year old girl.

It happened just before 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in a duplex on the 1300 block of Loreen Drive.

"We believe that this is not a random incident," says Public Information Officer Mike Hanson of the Madison Police Department, "At this time its an active serious investigation and we have numerous detectives working on this."

Officers canvassed the area while neighbors sat in disbelief, watching and waiting.

"It's scary because I have 4 kids of my own," says Yeaulonda Vance who lives down the street, "To think that in this same neighborhood where I live in, right across the street someone got shot makes a person want to move."

Neighbor Jill Cortez says, "I'm very shocked and I'm ready to move because there was an incident last week, not that bad but it was a couple up and that was scary. This is just getting too close to home."

For Jennie Nelson, it's too close. She lives across the street from the scene. She's friends with both the victim and others who were at the home at the time of the shooting.

"I got there when I heard crying," recalls Jennie, "I ran over there cause that's my friend, I wanted to make sure she's okay, and I got there and Sarah was on the ground, she ain't had no life."

Jennie claims it was a complete accident, after a friend brought a gun into the home.

"Sarah tried to grab the gun from him, he tried to pull the gun back and said 'No, I have to put this away there's kids in the house' and the gun went off," says Jennie.

Still police remain tight lipped.

"Right now we haven't ruled out anything," says Officer Hanson.

We know the victim was going to be a senior at Memorial High School.

Police are still looking for some of those involved in the shooting.

Officer tell NBC 15 no arrests have been made and the weapon has not been recovered.
