The effort to cleanse a local area body of water is creating quite a *buzz*.
Madison's mayor says new technology is getting rid of bluegreen algae. The Solar Bees were installed in Madison's Monona Bay earlier this summer. And according to Mayor Dave Cieslewicz... they have reduced the amount of algae in the bay.
The six devices, which cost about $40,000 apiece, were provided to the city for a free, summerlong test to determine their impact.
Unfortunately, Mayor Dave says the Bees are only designed for small bodies of water. This is not a strategy that, unfortunately, seems to have much applicability for the larger lakes, says Cieslewicz.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's gonna do us much good in Monona and Mendota, but, for Monona Bay, it actually could have some benefits.
Mayor Dave says the city's engineering department will conduct an analysis to determine whether he should include the Bees in his 2006 budget proposal.
