Shuttle Help Found in Janesville

A Janesville company is eagerly awaiting Wednesday's space shuttle launch.

In preparation for the launch of the Discovery, NASA has been testing its equipment to make sure it's ready for extreme conditions. But engineers reached a problem when tests involving their large vacuum chambers failed.

That's when COMO Industrial Equipment of Janesville stepped in. After the industrial equipment company provided oil filtration systems for NASA's vacuum pumps, their problems disappeared.

"So they put our filters on their vacuum systems and their problems disappeared, because we were able to keep and maintain the cleanliness level of the oil to a point that was even better than new," says Bart Furey, Executive Vice President and General Manager of COMO Industrial Equipment.

By using vacuum chambers, NASA simulates space environments in order to test hardware in conditions that would occur in space.

Thanks to the oil filtration system, NASA no longer has to worry about interruptions during tests, which can cost up to several hundred–thousand dollars.
