A once struggling Madison neighborhood gets a new look.
After more than ten years of planning, the city will soon have a new affordable housing option. Construction on the new Lake Point Condominiums is under way on the city's south side.
Lake Point Drive used to be known as Simpson Street. It had a reputation as being one of the city's worst areas. But the name was changed in 1999 as part of an effort to clean up the neighborhood.
And this project is a part of that plan.
"Everybody pulling together has resulted in the Renaissance of this neighborhood,” says Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz. “This used to be Madison's most challenged neighborhood, and now it isn't."
When it's complete more than 50 condos and townhouses will be available for about $80,000. The total cost of the project is about $4 million.
