UPDATE: Tuesday, April 2, 2008
Co-workers of local man killed in a hit and run crash on Saturday want justice. But, the man investigators suspect of causing the deadly wreck is missing.
"You hear about things like this every day. This one really hits home because we're used to John walking in with that great big smile on his face every day," Dan Shoemaker says.
It seems 40-year-old John Kauffman had plenty of reasons to smile.
He'd worked at this Peterbilt dealership in DeForest for more than 10 years.
"Donned the name pigpen after he started here 'cause he was a little bit messy in his early years," Shoemaker says.
But, boss Dan Shoemaker considered the Army and National Guard veteran one of the most dependable employees.
"He was always the one to show up in a snowstorm., two wheel drive
Camaro there'd be 13 inches of snow," he says,
"John was always the one you could count on to show up and he didn't have the excuse that he was stuck in the snow or didn't have 4WD to get here."
Shoemaker says on Saturday night Kauffman was headed back to Pardeeville after going out to dinner with his wife.
"They were out celebrating their 14th wedding anniversary," Shoemaker says.
It would be their last anniversary spent together. Around 9:00, the sheriff says a Waunakee man named Abraham Miranda-Arreola struck Kauffman's car, killing him and injuring his wife.
"We do have a detective assigned to the case. We're working with the District Attorney's office in hopes of drafting charges to place a warrant out for his arrest," the sheriff says.
Investigators say Kauffman was headed north on 51 when the suspect ran this stop sign. They say Miranda-Arreola then took off on foot but left his truck behind.
"Hopefully this person will show up. You know be a man about what you did. Turn yourself in, you were wrong and if anybody else knows where he is, who he is -- help us get a hold of him," Shoemaker says of the suspect.
The sheriff says people living in the area helped investigators search nearby fields but found no sign of the suspect.
"We have notified federal officials as well to assist us in the outside chance that he may be attempting either to leave the state or leave the country," Sheriff David Mahoney says.
"Business is business. We can all pick up and carry on and go on because that's the way the world is structured, but you know ... John's no longer with us and that's a hard thing to accept," Shoemaker says.
The sheriff says Kauffman's wife has been released from the hospital. He says Miranda-Arreola also is married lives and works in Waunakee but is originally from Honduras.

Anonymous @ 11:30, hit and run situations are rarely accidental. They may not have been intended, and I doubt this was intentional, but almost all of them could easily be avoided if the person causing the situation (pedestrian or driver) paid attention to what they were doing. This was likely a mistake that this driver could have taken responsibility for. As for deportation, absolutely if here illegally, but we don't know that because he keeps running. If you aren't going to obey the law to come into the country, I can't trust you to care about any of the laws while you're here.
This was an ACCIDENT...so stop talking like the man meant to kill the man. He does need to turn himself in for sure. One of the stupidest remarks I saw on here was the person that said if someone comes here illegally, they should be deported or death penalty. They should die just cuz they broke the law...should u die when u break the law? And there are hundreds around the country being deported everyday already. My condolences to the family n friends. I hope u get the closure and peace that u are hoping for!
we are talking about lifes,no ilegal persons,a mean he likes kill persons? i dont thing so,maybe the wheather was a factor, only God knows why happens this things,my prays for johns family.
