UW Hospital and Clinics announces big plans for Madison's east side.
The hospital plans to buy land for the future development of a medical services complex.
The plans are still premature, but officials say they are in the process of buying 42 acres of land in the American Center Business Park.
The land is slated to be used for offices, ambulatory services or inpatient services.
Residents living east of Madison say a new hospital would alleviate a number of problems, including drive time during an emergency.
"I just got out of Saint Marys a few weeks ago and it was a long hike there and back," says John Chyna, "It was hard for my wife to get there."
Marshall resident Mary Heiman says, "I think it's a good idea because a lot of times to drive way over there or on the beltline [is hard] where this would be a lot closer and a lot handier."
"If you could go to the [UW East Side] clinic and run to the hospital and not be clear out on the west side for other tests it would be great," adds UW East Side Clinic patient, Jeanne Chyna.
In a statement released to the press, hospital officials say, "The land acquisition addresses one of UWHC's nine strategic goals -- maximizing the use of current resources to accommodate our patients' needs in the future. This purchase will allow us to explore options to address a range of future patient and family needs."
The first piece of land will be purchased by the end of September. After that, officials will begin site planning.
Construction is slated to begin in the next 5 years.
