A man woken by police after passing out behind the wheel of his car will spend some time at the Dane County Jail.
50-year-old Frederick Earls of Chicago was allegedly passed out early Saturday morning on the eastbound Beltline ramp near Whitney Way.
Police say Earls regained consciousness, then crashed his 2005 Nissan Altima into a Madison Fire Department ambulance responding to the scene. That caused his car to get stuck.
Police say the man then attempted to accelerate, causing one of his tires to explode and injure several officers. Once the car became dislodged from the ambulance.
Police say Earls drove into a nearby parking lot, nearly striking a firefighter and paramedic. He then jumped out of the car forcing a firefighter to jump in and gain control.
