The Dane county sheriff's department is using underwater technology to assist the search for two area boaters.
Darren Mellor, 25, of Brooklyn and Christopher Dickinson, 25, of Ridgeway, have been missing since Sunday when their empty boat was found floating on Lake Mendota.
Thursday, a sheriff's sergeant says a team is using a sonar device to scan an area in the center of the lake where the 17 foot boat was spotted Sunday.
“It sends out a beam. We can control the width to 300 feet wide on it,” says Sgt. Dave Ritter, with the Dane County Sheriff’s Department. “We've been working in some 70 foot depths, so to get a picture of the bottom and any objects down there.”
Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Mellor or Dickinson is asked to call authorities at 255–2345 or 284–6155.
