Dry Summer Not Preventing West Nile Virus

A mostly dry summer is not keeping the West Nile Virus out of Wisconsin.

Two pools of mosquitoes in Milwaukee County have tested positive for the virus. A local health department official says that's not surprising.
He says that dry weather has led to fewer mosquitoes, but the threat of the virus is still here to stay.

“We know that there are mosquitoes in the area that are carrying the virus,” says John Hausbeck, of the Madison Department of Public Health. “Essentially what that means for people is that they need to be taking precautions to avoid mosquito bites.”

Health experts recommend wearing insect repellant and long sleeves while outdoors. Also don't forget to change the water in your backyard birdbaths and pools. Any water sitting out any longer than five days can become a mosquito breeding ground.
