If not for a friend's wedding, a musician now living temporarily in Madison, could have been stuck in the middle of Hurricane Katrina.

Helen Gillet is a former UW student who had been living in New Orleans the past three years. She had brought her cat and two cellos up north in August so she could play at a friend's wedding in Canada.

She doesn't know how badly her apartment in New Orleans was damaged by the Hurricane, but her thoughts are on more important things right now.

"At this point, I've kind of said goodbye to my belongings, and I'm just hoping for the best for that city. I'm a musician, and the music that's down there is the main reason I went there, and I fully intend to go back and play my cello in New Orleans again," she says.

In the meantime, Gillet will perform with the Madison Symphony Orchestra in their season opener this weekend at Overture Hall.
