Father & Son Killed in Crash Save Email Print

Investigators have identified the father and son killed in a Dodge County car crash.

It happened around two Friday afternoon in the Town of Beaver Dam.

The sheriff says 19-year-old Gilberto Zavala and 41-year-old Pedro Zavala, both from Cambria, were killed.

Two other people from Beaver Dam were injured.

Authorities say the Zavalas were westbound on County Highway B, when an 86-year-old woman exiting US 151 ran a stop light and hit Pedro Zavala's car.

His vehicle then hit a third vehicle, injuring the driver.

The woman who ran the stop light also was taken to the hospital with injuries.

I was on the scene of this horrible accident. I have thought about it every day since and will remember it for the rest of my life. I only wish I could have done more to help. My heart goes out to the Zavala family. What an unnecessary loss of life.

I also agree with Cindy. As a friend of this family it sickens me to no end on how our traffic laws are structured for the elderly. This totally could have been avoided! Our hearts are out to the Zavalas. El dios esté con usted Pedro e Gilberto!

We have known the Zavalas for many years. They are from our hometown of Del Rio, Tx. It is a tragedy what happened Friday, Afternoon. The Zavala family are in our thoughts and prayers.

This is an unfortunate problem that is only going to get larger as the population grows older. I take care of a man with Alzheimers/Dementia and it has been very very long road to take away his privlige to drive and even after the actual license was gone you have to remove the car this creates alot of family stress ---- many of the elderly don't have anyone to help them or even care if they shouldn't be driving This is a side effect of the BUSY lives we all lead. It won't change until people are willing to step up and help

I met Gilbert about 3 years ago and we instantly became friends. He always made me laugh and smile. The night he died my friend and I were going to go to prom with him the next day. My friend and I both agreed that we wouldn't go. Gilbert was an amazing friend and I will miss him greatly. Sympothy to the family and other friends of Gilbert.

Regardless of the womans age she needs to face the music just as she would if she was 16 or 18! Let a Jury of 12 figure it out! We cant just take peoples DL's away but we can surely make it harder for them to drive by making them pass specific test yearly! My opinion is she probably feels terrible but that is not how the laws work! She needs to face the consequences just as if one of us did it! I also hope they took her blood to see if she was under the influence of any medications because you can recieve a DUI for being on meds that may alter your driving!

I agree with you Cindy. Why does a tragidy have to happen before specific measures are taken. The only added thing that I would add, when you get to a certain age, you lose your privelage to drive. You don't get your license until your 16. You don't get to drink until your 21. There is a specific age to start your privelage. There should be one to end it. Yes, there would be some elderly people that would qualify to be able to drive that you are taking away from. But its for the good. Tragedies like this one could have been avoided. My sympothy to the families.

Well immediatelty when I heard what happened, I couldn't believe it. I personally knew Gilbert through a friend from Cambria and he was a very nice gentlemen. He would always make me feel better after a long day at school and he also would comment my myspace pics saying how beautiful I was. I wish the family a lot of sympathy and may god help them through their hard time.

Hmmm....another elderly driver. Doesn't it make sense now to test reflexes and vision, etc of drivers over 70-75. This tragedy could have been avoided. I think there should be mandatory testing for drivers in this range. It is medical fact that vision, reflexes, and sometimes memory is diminished. This is not discrimination...this is fact and testing would save lives. How many drivers confuse the gas with the brake pedals of vehicles they have driven for years. Last I knew none of the car manufacturers are moving the gas or brake pedals. There needs to be a change. I send my sympathies to the Zavalas family, and other families who have lost loved ones in avoidable accidents like this one.

My family has known the Zavalas for many many years they are a nice family. Pedro and Gilberto will be greatly missed.

Once again our small rural community is mourning the loss of two of our citizens. Our thoughts, love, and prayers go out to the families of Pedro and Gilbert Zavala, who died as the result of a tragic accident. May you feel God's comforting presence through the days and months ahead.
