A convenience store on Madison's northeast side takes a unique approach to prevent thefts at the pump.

The Citgo on Commercial Avenue has what it calls, the window of shame.

It includes the pictures of people who fill up their tanks and drive away, without paying.

The pictures are printed from surveillance video.

Right now, there are 26 photos on display. One shows a man who allegedly owes $85.

The store manager says these are the most recent drive-off cases. The latest happened back on Sunday.

Nowadays, several gas stations require people to prepay before they can fill up, to avoid theft.

However, store manager Kendra Schlittler says she likes to give customers the benefit of the doubt.

"It would be a hassle to our customers and our customers would go somewhere else, that would not have the mandatory prepay," says Schlittler.

She says it takes around two days to make up for just $20 of stolen gas.

The window of shame has been around for about three years. Since then, around 500 photos have come and gone.

In one instance, Schlittler says a mother noticed her son in a picture and paid off his debt.

Madison police call gas theft a preventable crime. Spokesman Joel DeSpain tells NBC 15 it's not a trend the department regularly tracks.

Nationwide, gas thefts totaled $134-million in 2007. That's about $1,000 per station, according to the National Association of Convenience Stores.

Having less drive off's or no drive off's does not have a play in what the fuel prices are in the state(s). What we pay for a barrel of crude oil at the end of the market day, costs of shipping, taxes ect. are the factors in the cost's. Wisconsin has a set minimum pricing that we as a state have to follow. We price under state limit you get fined and eventually can be shut down. Police need to put drive-offs as a priority as they would some one stealing at the grocery store. When you broad cast that the Police do not do anything on local news.....hello what are you telling the dishonest public?

In Colorado ALL of the gas stations are prepay---and they have zero loss.

this was cool that the mother did this: In one instance, Schlittler says a mother noticed her son in a picture and paid off his debt. She should charge him twice of what she paid on his tab. He's lucky he wasn't turned in, a fine and loss of drivers license.

The drive-offs are wrong, of course...but how about the ones responsible for gouging the customer with high gas prices, especially during a recession?!? Shame on them!!!

I agree with the bad checks and shoplifters, but if they did that all of the windows would be covered with deadbeats and therefore no daylight would enter! i work at a citgo on the west side run by the same company as the one on commercial ave, let me tell you we have twice as many drive offs as they do on a daily basis.

If they required pre-pay, they could theoretically lower the price of gas because it would eliminate the loss from theft. It would, however increase their labor costs because the attendant would have to either watch or set the pump so they could not over fill. I think it is a good idea to require people to pre pay. Almost everyone pays with a card now anyway.

the only solution to this problem is "pre-pay". no other way around it. otherwise people with drive-off. cameras and police don't do anything about this. police will not handle calls on drive offs, or let alone follow up on a drive off even if you get a plate number. its ends up being free gas for some thief, while the rest of us pay for it with higher prices.

I love this gas station for this policy. I choose to fill up there becuse of it. The first time I saw it I had just glanced and thought it was cars for sale or something. I mentioned it to the cashier that it was odd and then he explained the whole premise. I love it! I think it is an awesome idea. Maybe we should do it with shoplifters and bad check writers too! :)

Gas stations should be having prepay. It protects themselves and the customers. If every station had prepay, they wouldn't have to worry about customers going to the next station. If people don't have credit/debit card, then they can go in and pay with cash before pumping gas. Use of pin should be helpful to help prevent credit/debit card thefts.

I feel for the stations when people fill up and drive off, then it raises the price for us that are honest. They should have prepay. I always use my check/credit card at the pumps anyways. I appreciate the thought of them giving customers the benefit of the doubt.

I think its a GREAT idea. Those thieves make everything I buy more expensive. Heres another idea, if shooting them with a camera doesn't work, try a shotgun.
