GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Temp agencies in Northeast Wisconsin say the high gas prices are having a growing effect on people looking for jobs.

Blaise Krautkramer works at Firstaff Staffing Services in the Fox Cities area. Krautkramer says some job seekers are offered assignments that involve a commute of 20, 30 or 40 miles but they're starting to hesitate.

Krautkramer says the Firstaff offices in Green Bay and Appleton get about 50 job hunters per week, and a fair number are passing up job opportunities that involve long driving distances.

Lori Reynolds of Manpower agrees. She says her company used to attract workers from the entire valley, but the gas prices now have people second-guessing whether they want to take an opportunity in Green Bay.

I also am in the same position D. I can't afford to hit the road to look for work either. I've sent out hundreds of resumes and cover letters and hardly get one response. I've tried the temp agency route and that is far from helpful. I havn't even heard back from them. With all of the people getting laid off, it's hard to compete with that many people looking for work. I've been offered one job from an employment agency and wouldn't have even made enough to cover the gas. And I couldn't afford to drive the 100 mile round trip to Rockford or Madison for much less than $11-12.00/hour and that would be breaking even. It's a eally tough time out there. I know I'm not the only one!

up north where we stay in the eagle river area gas is $4.14 a gallon for the cheapest and well over 4.60 for premium. i don't see a point to drive 40 miles and back to work for the day when the entire profit you would make is spent on gas. blatent waste of time to work for free. might as well just volunteer or something. its nice out government is robbing our people at the pumps.and i agree temp agencies are crap.

I am one of those, Cant afford to hit the road to look for work because of the fuel prices, all i can do is send resumes out. This economy sucks esp in Madison, temp agencies dont hold any promise in my book for work personally
