According to an UPDATE from the City of Madison Fire Department:
A City of Madison Firefighter on his way to work was among the first on scene at this morning’s semi-trailer crash on I-94 at the Badger Interchange.
Apparatus Engineer Todd Sailor was on his way to work when he heard the crash. He narrowly avoided the impact and ran to investigate. Sailor found a passenger car wedged under the driver’s side of the semi’s cab. The car was on fire, with the driver still inside. Sailor and two other passers-by were able to pull the driver to safety through the windshield.
The crash, involving the semi-trailer and at least three passenger vehicles, occurred just before 7 a.m. on westbound 94. The cab of the semi was fully engulfed in flames as crews from Stations 5, 8 and 10 arrived on scene.
Additional resources were requested from surrounding communities to ensure a steady supply of water. Cottage Grove and Maple Bluff responded to the scene. The fire was under control by 7:15 a.m.
The individual transported by Med Flight was the driver of the passenger car wedged under the truck cab.
The tanker blocked two lanes of the highway. Westbound 94 was closed to traffic and expected to reopen later today.
