According to a news release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

Shortly at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17th, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call of a possible drowning near Holly Lane in the town of Deerfield.

A 10 year-old boy was swimming in a creek when the current swept him out of sight from the people watching him from the creek’s bank. After a short search, a deputy was able to locate the boy who had grabbed hold of a branch to keep from floating farther down the creek. The deputy pulled the boy to safety and he was evaluated by EMS and returned to his mother.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office urges citizen’s to use extra caution near creeks and rivers and any area where flood waters exists. Water can be a magnet for children and adults alike. The force of moving water can be deceptive and the current may be stronger than expected. If you see someone fall into swift water, never enter the water and attempt a swim rescue. You too will more than likely become a victim. Instead, throw the victim a floatation device if possible and call 911.

What are some parents thinking? The surface of the water may not indicate how strong the under-current may be. Parents, keep your children out of creeks, streams and rivers until the water levels lower! Whaters that may have been safe before the floods, can be deadly now! Not rocket science, just understand the power of water.
