Details:
On 12-4-11; at around 2:56 am, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a hit and run crash near the intersection of 8th Street and Roosevelt Street in the City of Fennimore.
Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the scene to assist Fennimore PD officers who were tied up on another investigation.
Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies made contact with the victim, Ann McGuire, who pointed out that her 2008 Nissan had been struck.
Next to the damaged Nissan were several pieces of the offending vehicle which was determined to be silver in color.
The sheriff’s Office received a second call reporting a silver car had struck an embankment on Rogers Hollow Road just west of Fennimore.
When deputies arrived at that crash scene, they observed a 2002 Subaru had went over an embankment and struck a fence but no one was around the vehicle.
Dispatch received yet another 911 call relating to this incident reporting that the driver of that vehicle, Marcus W Henkel, 21, Fennimore / La Crosse, was walking on Rogers Hollow Road.
A family member transported him back to the crash scene. Sheriff’s Deputies spoke with Mr. Henkel and determined that he had been drinking and his driving was impaired. Henkel was arrested for OWI.
It was later determined that Henkel had left the Hilltop Bar in the City of Fennimore and traveled west on 8th Street striking the McGuire vehicle. He then continued west on 8th Street towards Wilson Street. Once he reached Wilson Street, he missed his turn and drove through the lawn of 820 Wilson Street and ran over a mailbox. Henkel continued south through the yards and knocked over a streetlight owned by the City of Fennimore then struck a parked 2003 Ford truck belonging to John Rutkowski. Henkel then drove west to Rogers Hollow Road where he drove over the embankment and into the fence.
Henkel was also charged with, Prohibited Alcohol Concentration 1st Offense, Hit and Run, and Failure to Notify Police of an Accident.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Department was Fennimore Police and Collision Specialists.
