According to the Dane County Sheriff's Department:

At approximately 6:30 am, Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a Hit and Run on Fitchrona Road near Grandview Road in the town of Verona.

A 59-year-old Madison man was cycling southbound on Fitchrona Road and was attempting to make a left turn when a dark-colored pick-up pulling a flatbed trailer, also traveling southbound, tried to pass him illegally on the left. The pick-up driver struck the bicyclist and then left the scene of the crash. The pick-up truck may have been hauling lawn equipment on the flatbed trailer.

The bicyclist received serious but non-life threatening injuries. He was transported by Fitch-Rona EMS to UW Hospital. The crash is under investigation by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Dane County Tip Line at (608) 284-6900.

John, you are right. However, you seem to forget the bad driver on the road. Every time I drive some where I see numerous people on cell phones, people speeding in residential areas, no signaling of turns, rolling through stop signs, etc. Having police enforce rules on drivers for inatentive driving would be good also. That said, cyclists need to wake up and realize what type of damage a car or truck can do, and then get out of the way. I'm not sure if some are brave or just stupid (maybe a little of both). Get well soon mr. cyclist.

I drive up and down highway pd on the other side of m a couple of time a day. The cyclist that ride that road, believe that they own the road. They also ride 2 or 3 wide; per state law they are suppose to ride single file line. Where there any witnesses to the accident. I want ot knew if the drive of the truck was a 100 percent at fault.

I drive in this area on a daily basis, and have seen more than numerous bikers on these roads not following the rules of the roads. I have seen frequent bikers not riding singler file on these very narrow roads. The county really needs to do something in this area with the increased traffic before someone gets killed. Perhaps a wider road, or another bike path heading south from Fitchburg. Even having the police enforce the rules would be good. I feel for the person who was injured, it was very cowardly to leave an injured person along the road.

Dale, Do you know why these idiots don't signal? When they're dumb enough to talk on the phone when they drive, they don't have a free hand for the signal. I guess they could always let go of the wheel. See you in the wall.

The way people in Dane County drive, I am not suprised. Come on people try to use a signal at least once a day.

I drive this area to and from work every day; I've been frustrated with the cyclists not following the traffic rules and I’m amazed that someone hasn’t been killed yet. Yesterday a cyclist cut over in front of me to make a left turn, the space between my car and the one in front of me was not more than 12 feet! Until the cyclists start following the rules, quit driving through the stop signs and riding side by side blocking traffic, we will see more accidents. The cyclists need to step-up and be more responsible. I wish the injured cyclist a speedy recovery and hope the driver who hit him is punished.

No doubt, hit and run, not cool. However, I have seen many, many cyclists blow stop signs without looking to see what is coming. A reminder that bikes share the road, they don't own the road.

While gas prices continue to climb and more and more people decide to find alternate methods of transportation, such as biking, unfortunately this will be more common. More bikes = more chances of people being injured. If everyone respects the others road spaces, we may not have AS many incidents, but accidents do happen. For the person to flee the scene is unimaginable to me.

Maybe they should paste this story with "taking the bike lane" obviously the fool needs read, be more respectful, and follow the laws.

What are these people thinking when they leave after hitting someone! C'mon people get a brain and have a heart, it could mean the difference between life and death for that person. Accidents can happen, but I have NO sympathy for the cowards who leave!
