Monday, July 7, 2008 --- 3:45 p.m.

According to a news release from the Dane County Sheriff's Office:

At approximately 10:05 pm on Sunday July 6, a Dane County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop the driver of a black and yellow sport-type motorcycle traveling at a high rate of speed and passing in a no passing zone on USH 14 near Stagecoach Road in the town of Cross Plains. Rather than start a pursuit of the cyclists, the deputy used his radio to alerted the Cross Plains Police of the speeding cyclists entering their jurisdiction.

Seconds later, a Cross Plains Police Officer located the motorcyclist entering the Village of Cross Plains traveling west on USH 14, then turning north on Brewery Road. The officer attempted to stop the motorcyclists who continued to travel at excessive speeds and failed to stop at two stop signs during the pursuit. The motorcyclists continued northbound on CTH P. While in pursuit, the Cross Plains Officer lost control of his squad car, crashing into concrete barriers at the corner of Church Street and Thinnes Street. The Cross Plains Officer was not injured, however his squad car did sustain significant damage. The motorcyclist was last seen traveling east on Airport Road from the village.

The Dane County Sheriff’s Office and the Cross Plains Police Department are seeking information on the driver of the motorcycle. Anyone with information is asked to call the Cross Plains Police Department at (608) 798-4100.

If we let most of thes vilolators go, things will become more dangerous. I'd be willing to bet there would be more injuries, property damage and deaths when there is no deterent.

Anon 4:32, Let's say you right. Let's take down a the speed limit signs down right now. We let the renegades do what they want because they know they can get away with it. Tell me how that is a good thing. IT'S NOT!!! Every highway would be like a race track. No controls what so ever. Come back to earth and bring a real solution. Unless you going to be at every high speed chase let the officer decide.

To the ones that defend the actions of the officer or the ones that that says "let them run wild"..... I do not ever want to hear any crying or whining when you are injured or your property is damaged by a high speed pursuit gone awry. There is a huge difference between a high speed pursuit that is not impacting or affecting the saftey of others and one that puts other motorist at risk. This one clearly put others at risk and should have been let go.

Let them run wild. anon 8:36 will wait for at their house.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 04:55 PM
Easy to determine? I see people do this all the time and they don't even have lights or sirens.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 04:47 PM
Were you there? How do you know so much? Maybe we should just let them run wild.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 9, 2008 at 08:36 AM
Easy to determine it was time to call it off "traveling at a high rate of speed and passing in a no passing zone". That puts other motorists at risk for injury by continuing to pursue and furthering the wrecklessness of the operators actions. If they fled because they had something to "hide" then they will be caught eventually. No point in risking injury to others by extenuating these circumstances.

Anon 2:17, How do know it was time to call it off? Maybe the officer isn't as good a driver as he thought. BTW, what's to stop all renagade motorcyclists from tearing up the streets? I can here them know "Don't worry...We can do what ever we want...they wont chase us."

To anon at 2:17p.m. You are accurate in your statement, however alot of times I think when cops chase after a guy on a bike quite often it is the bike that loses control and you have an injury on the bike and biker. Not to the patrol car and in some cases the officer.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 8, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Greg P. Just about all the bike that come into our shop for estimates are not the riders fault. You get a stiffer charge if you hit a bicyclist then you get if you hit a motorcyclist. I can't count how many times I have seen a car pull out in front of a motorcycle. I am the first to say that the individual riding the bike is a moran. A person like this gives all bikers a bad name.

This is a perfect case and point of exactly why there is protocol in place to not continue to pursue any vehicle that is deemed an unsafe pursuit. This should never have been allowed to happen. An officer that is supposed to be trained in not only high speed pursuits but also in law enforcement should have known that the person was not planning on stopping and should have ended the pursuit and not risk further injury or damage to themselves or anyone else or any property. Motorcycles are fast and can easily outmanuever a car, this is not a new concept. All this in an effort to have an officer be the "hero" and catch the bad guy no matter what the cost. I'm just surprised that it was the Cross Plains officer that wrecked and not the incompetent Dane County officers.

All I can say is what goes around comes around...KARMA...the motorcyclist will get what he deserves eventually. A nice skull fracture would probably do him justice.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 8, 2008 at 11:55 AM
Hey Anon.9:55 You should not say that about cops. I'm not one or related to any, nor do I really like them for that matter. But for real, I'm sure the cop felt he needed to catch this guy and was just trying his best. I don't know what you do for a living, but how would you like to do your very best at work and then have things completely shatter and have to tell your boss.(in this case trash out a cruiser) Not fun to say the least.

Sauk county must have faster squads or cops that are better drivers. My friend tried to outrun a Sauk county officer in the Dells last week and they caught him. Now the moron is facing a felony.

How does working in a motorcycle shop tell you that 95% of motorcyclists follow the rules? Because they come into your shop and tell you so?

Posted by: Whada on Jul 8, 2008 at 09:23 AM
This motorcyclist is brave, stupid, or both. I'd guess mostly stupid!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 8, 2008 at 09:21 AM
anon jul 7, 7:28pm; working for a local motorcycle shop I can tell you that more then 95% of motorcyclist follow the rules. I can tell that there are more morans in cars than on bikes. I can't count how many times I have seen a car turn right into the path of a motorcycle.

How many was there? Sometimes the story references more than one.

When they catch this guy are they going to make him pay for the squad car the cop trashed?

Posted by: Anon on Jul 7, 2008 at 09:09 PM
Looks like the officer got schooled!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:28 PM
Oh, I thought it was the bikers that follow ALL the rules of the road, right?

Posted by: Zoom on Jul 7, 2008 at 07:25 PM
That a boy Zoomer! They wont catch you! HA HA! I feel the need for speed!

Posted by: TIM on Jul 7, 2008 at 05:50 PM
I was under the impression, again, if there is really no need to pursue a situation like this the cops should just let the guy go. Somewhere along the line they usually catch these morons. I think they are posting this pursuit because of the damage the squad car got trying to catch the guy, in addition I bet when they do find him they will also make him pay for the damages to the squad car. (I bet the DMV is running all the bikes in the area right now)I hope the guy reads this and is trippin out!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 05:37 PM
Did they not get a license plate during the pursuit?

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 05:26 PM
hahaha man thas kewl. bet if the cops really wanna find him go check out bike night o.-

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 05:07 PM
omg that is awesome. props to the driver. dunno y they would ever bother to try to chase them in the first place. cop car is nothing to a bike in speed.

Posted by: Anonymous on Jul 7, 2008 at 04:48 PM
Apparently motorcyclists are invincible these days...does it take a crash to kill them like the dude that crashed on Hwy 51 & 30 to get their attention?
