Imagine this: you've just gotten out of the frigid cold, you're relaxing, watching TV, surfing the web, maybe making dinner, when all the sudden...boom! No more power, no more heat.

That was the case for Dave and Jan Kinnaird on Monday night.
They, along with around 900 other MG&E customers on Madison’s east side, lost power for several hours.

Dave says their power was out for a little over 2 hours, which can be an eternity, when sub-zero temperatures surround your now dark, heat-less home.

"Basically just kept our outer garments on, our jackets our coats, and sat here on the couch” says Dave.

The Kinnairds lit up a few candles, but say it didn't provide much heat.

"We jumped in the car and went for a ride to warm up and ended up down at McDonalds for supper ” says Dave.

The Kinnairds have lived in the same home for 15 years and never before had a power outage during the winter. They weren't ready for it Monday night, but they're ready now, should it happen again this winter.

"We've got flashlights all over the house, we've got candles all over the house, and blankets” says Dave and Jan.

Here are a few tips if you experience a winter power outage:

1.Get your insulation checked. The more heat you can keep in, the longer your home will stay warm.

2. Grab your family and go into one room and close the door to conserve heat.

3. Open cupboard doors under sinks so pipes along outside walls won't freeze.
