With thunderstorms in the forecast, residents living in flood soaked areas are preparing once again for high water. And, many are even sand-bagging for the first time trying to protect what's left inside their homes after being pounded with heavy rain week after week by storm after storm.
Buzz Wood says, "When I started pumping it was up to there and up along the garage there." This is the third time in six weeks Wood has pumped water out of the backyard of his Reedsburg home. Wood says, "It just seems like every morning you wake up and in the backyard you see what you got?" Thursday morning it was another 4" of rain on already saturated ground.
Now he's trying to get rid of that water in advance of more thunderstorms heading our way so what he and his wife salvaged from their basement in June can be spared in July. Wood says, "Threw away a refrigerator, but everything else, we got pumped early enough so that we saved basically everything else, the furnace was fine, the washer and dryer we hauled those outside and disinfected and dried them out."
Across town at the high school, Nikki Williams is sand bagging for the first time. Recent rains also flooded their basement and damaged the family's woodworking shop. Williams says, "My husband figured $18.000 in tools, Woodworking tools and we quoted 3 different prices for about $9,000, $10,000 to fix the basement." They were able to salvage some tools, which they are now fighting to save. Williams says, "One or two inches of rain is going to flood us in a hurry, especially after last night. Last night's was pretty bad."
The Williams live at the base of a slope. They hope they can strategically place the sandbags to keep the water from running down the hill and into their home. But if not, Williams has a plan. She says, "I've got all my pictures packed, my memorabilia, that's the only thing worth anything... makes you think about what's really important."
We did speak with Sauk County emergency management who says having a plan before a disaster happens is one of your best lines of defense. Knowing where to go, what to take and how to escape are all important things to know ahead of time.
If your looking to sand bag, both the bags and the sand are available at Reedsburg High School and the West Baraboo Garage.
