"Extreme Home Makeover" Comes to Richland Center Save Email Print

A | A | A

Thursday, July 24, 2008 --- 12 p.m.

According to a news release from Veridian Homes:

On Thursday, “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will be visiting Richland Center, Wisconsin, to rescue the Anders-Beatty Family from their crumbling home. The water damage, peeling roof and nesting critters lend to this home’s dreadful appearance and dangerous disrepair. Ty and his designers will completely restore their home in only seven days, giving the Anders Family the quality of life they deserve.

Rochelle Anders is an excellent first-grade teacher for the past 29 years who received the 2005 Wal-Mart “Teacher of the Year” award from Richland Center. She has four children, Tess, Reid, Drew, and Tyler, who range from ages 12 to 20. When their father suddenly died from a heart attack, Rochelle tried to repair their dilapidated home.

Despite her attempts, the roof is peeling apart, the wood siding and ceilings are crumbling, and squirrels, birds, and mice are nesting in the walls. Inside the house, holes are evident in the ceilings and water damage has stained the walls. With only a wood furnace to heat the home, the children had to live with relatives this past winter. It is now up to Ty and his designers to step in and keep the family together, by keeping the house together as well.

While Ty and the designers, local builder Veridian Homes and hundreds of volunteers and workers are rebuilding their home, the Anders-Beatty family will go on vacation to Canada.

The design team for this episode of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” will feature team leader Ty Pennington and designers Paul DiMeo, Paige Hemmis, Eduardo Xol and John Littlefield.

To Meagan, the family comes home on Thursday. If you go to www.veridiangives.com I believe they have a timeline posted. Otherwise I'm sure the sponsor station has more info. It's listed below from Chet! To C in Beloit, it is amazing and sad that people cannot focus on the good things being done here.

Foreclosure: I just read an article about that house and it says the family took out a loan against the house in order to start a business (which failed). They were given almost 3/4 of a million dollars for home maintenance and taxes for the next 25 years. So, yes, the houses are given to families with no payment. Hope that answers your question!

Does anyone know when they will be bringing the family home? or when the first day of the seven day makeover began? I would love to take my kids to see this...we all sit down and watch this every sunday evening together... it is such a tear jerker...

I'm wondering when these homes are built they are given to the families with no type of payment? correct? The reason I am asking this, on CBS nightly news they just had a home outside of Atlanta that was built by Extreme Makeover that will be going on the auction block. They also said it is the first home Extreme Makeover built that was going into foreclosure, and I'm not quite understanding why that is. Or is it from property taxes?

It's amazing how these comments becoming so degraded -- it is an absolutely wonderful gift for a family in need!! One of my close friends who lives in RC is helping by embroidering a label for a quilt being made by talented local quilters with fabric, etc donated by the quilt shop in Reedsburg. Many caring and giving individuals are involved!! Kudos and thank you to all those involved in any way!!! Let's concentrate on the positive effect such a blessing will have on this family.

Ms. Anders was my 1st grade teacher (22 years ago). I remember her being very kind and patient. I moved out of the area after high school and had no idea she was living in those conditions or that she was a finalist for EHMO. I signed up at www.veridiangives.com in hopes that I could help build Sue Klang a home. I am glad that I was chosen as a volunteer for this weekend and look forward to the chance to help Ms. Anders & her family. I agree that both families should have won but just to show you how good of a person Sue Klang is, she was also chosen as a volunteer and worked on the EHMO site today! A committee has been formed to build 'A Home For Sue'. I know they are looking for monetary donations as well as material and labor. Watch the news for more information or contact the State Bank of Cazenovia. I hope that the Belmont family that applied for the EHMO can also get some assistance from their community, friends and family.

True fact, it's on the internet. haha! Good for the family though, their house was uninhabitable from what I saw on the news.

How come everything comes back to Brett... I am so sick of him! He quit, he's done... we need to get over him...

Dave, why would they advertise a program on another station? They are simply reporting on this because it's a great cause. I don't see how they are taking credit for it.

Posted by: D Location: Madison on Jul 25, 2008 at 10:56 AM
I think in this case Both this Family and Sue Klangs family should have both got it. Just for the aspect John put his life on the line and probably saved numerous students and staff that day. As far as Sues house it was Built by my Grandfathers Brother so the house is probably close to 130 yrs old and they need wood to heat it in the winter so that right there kinda tells ya how much they need the help also. John Klangs Dad was my Grandfathers Brother and John was my moms first or second cousin

To Pam no-stick cooking spray 7:18a.m., I could not agree more. However don't forget about the 4 semi trailors Brett Favre sent down to Hurrican Katrina anonymously with food and other supplies so people would not think he was doing that because he is famous. And that is a known fact he did this.

Posted by: amazed Location: dane county on Jul 25, 2008 at 08:24 AM
Pam, truer words could not be spoken.

Posted by: Pam on Jul 25, 2008 at 07:18 AM
I love hearing happy stories like this! It really makes Brett's story seem pretty trivial, which it is. If more focus was put on the the people like this family that really need help the world would be a better place.

The family selected by Extreme Makeover seem very deserving of a fresh new start. Visit veridiangives.com for volunteer information, directions to the site and donations for the family. Veridian is giving 100% of donations to the family.

How come you guys don't mention that this show is on another station? Are you trying to take credit for something you have nothing to do with?

Posted by: Chet Location: Richland County on Jul 24, 2008 at 06:15 PM
The crew from the ABC station in town made a big deal about this...why didn't you guys?

Hey Cinder block in Blue Mounds 3:38p.m. what makes YOU so special that YOU were selected? HUH?

Posted by: Ralph Location: Cross Plains on Jul 24, 2008 at 05:55 PM
Was this part of the caravan that came down Hwy 14 around 9:00 a.m. in Cross Plains and Black Earth? Saw the Richland County Sheriff escorting several cars and semis, as well as a large tour bus.

My husband and I were selected as volunteers for Sunday evening and are greatly looking forward to it. I am anxious to help others in need, and seeing Ty would be a nice bonus. Hey, Ty's energy is probably why he does commercials for Bayer Asprin, you know, the one you should take to help prevent or lessen damage from a heart attack? Ha! It's his energy level that keeps everyone else pumped and motivated. This show is amazing and the works that it does is phenomenal. I am not sure if there are volunteer spots left, but if not you can stay in the spectator area and be put on stand-by for a shift in case there are no shows. Good luck Anne!

I'm surprised Tye has not had a heart attack yet. That dude is like super high strung as an understatement.

Veridian's web site has a place to sign up as a volunteer. Great program! I love the help they give people in need.

Posted by: Lynn Location: Madison on Jul 24, 2008 at 01:25 PM
It's nice to see good things happen to good people. They can do all this in seven working days? I wonder when the show will air? How nice of all the volunteers and Veridian to help on this project.

Posted by: Anne Location: Madison on Jul 24, 2008 at 01:13 PM
Does anyone know how you can sign up to be a volunteer?

Posted by: jjones Location: SW WI on Jul 24, 2008 at 12:44 PM
Sounds like this family needs a helping hand. Congratulations to them!
