MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A new report ranks Wisconsin 10th in the nation in volunteer participation rate.

The Corporation for National and Community Service's annual report found Wisconsin's overall volunteer rate was 35 percent in 2007. The rate is based on how many people said they volunteered on a U.S. Census Bureau survey.

The report found more than 1.5 million people in Wisconsin volunteered last year.

Madison ranked third among the nation's mid-size cities with a volunteer rate of 42 percent. Milwaukee was seventh among large cities at 35 percent.

The report says Wisconsin residents on average contributed about 165 million volunteer hours between 2005 and 2007.

Our community hospital (I am the Coord. o Volunteer Services) currently has over 300 volunteers that contributed over 35,000 hours last year alone! I think there are far more volunteers than stated in this report. Many folks that "volunteer" don't consider what they do as "volunteer work!" They do it to give back to their communities, or as a sense of filling a need (as those that clean-up and build after disasters), or just for fun. How many people help out at their church - they are volunteers but don't usually consider themselves as such. The bottom line is if you have a heart for others you are likely volunteering in some way.

Not surprising. I would think it would be higher.
