Pedestrian Safety

Dane County drivers are lacking when it comes to pedestrian safety.

The Safe Community Coalition says last year nearly two percent of drivers failed to yield to pedestrians.

This year, a new program aims to improve the safety of pedestrians.
Project organizers hope to increase the number of motorists who yield to pedestrians.

Project Director John Bauer explains the group is also asking drivers to commit to safe practices behind the wheel.

"The key to the project really rests with each of us having an understanding of the traffic laws, knowing how to safely cross the street and taking personal responsibility for our driving behavior," Bauer says.

Enforcement zones will take place in downtown Madison, the Hilldale shopping area, downtown Stoughton and downtown Sun Prairie.
