CDC and FDA officials are warning the more than 30 million Americans who wear contact lenses of a fungal infection that could lead to permanent vision loss.
So far more than 100 cases of fusarium keratitis have been reported in soft contact lens users. A majority of the patients who reported this infection had been using Bausch and Lomb's Renu moisture loc contact lens solution.
That solution is now being recalled.
Experts, like Dr. Bennie Jeng with the Cleveland Clinic, say while there is an increase in cases now, it is still a relatively rare condition.
"In general contact lens related infections of the cornea being fungal related are actually very rare," Jeng says. "So the concern with this quote on quote outbreak is there's a lot people cropping up with this infection that usually doesn't show up on the radar that much."
If you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, you should contact your doctor immediately.
