Brown County authorities say they've been reviewing a sexual assault complaint against Steven Avery involving a teenage girl.
Avery is currently behind bars on charges that he raped and murdered freelance photographer Teresa Hallbach.
The new incident happened in 2004, but Brown County District Attorney John Zakowki says the charges won't be prosecuted until Avery's current case is closed.
He said, "If Avery is convicted of the homicide charge, any potential additional penalty to be gained from a successful sexual assault prosecution will be minimal. The impact to the complainant however, would likely be very great. She would be pulled into an understandably media frenzied atmosphere and have to undergo a trial which may be very embarrassing to her."
Zakowski says the victim is an extended relative of Avery, which is one reason she wishes to stay out of the spotlight.
