CrimeTracker 15: Worker Robbed at Gunpoint Save Email Print

An armed robbery gives a Madison liquor store owner the scare of a lifetime, for the second time this year.

This is despite hundreds of dollars spent to make sure it didn't happen again.

It's not a job where Harvey Zimmer ever thought he'd fear for his life, but one turn wiped away any feelings of safety.

Zimmer says, "As soon as I saw that I knew I was in trouble."

Zimmer was working the counter Thursday morning when two men came into his liquor store and took his life in their hands.

Zimmer says, "He just turned around, showed me a handgun and all I did was back up past the cash register, opened it up for him and just stayed out of his way."

Zimmer says it's the same man that pulled a gun on him in January and was never caught.

Making matters worse, all the money Zimmer spent on security cameras this time around didn't help when the burglars made him hand over the tape.

He says, "They're not completely ignorant to the situation. They know what's going on."

The burglars fled on foot, taking the cash and security tape but leaving Zimmer with his life.

He says, "Oh yeah, you're jumpy. You're jumpy for sometimes a month, month and a half. Somebody hits the door hard and your heart just drops you know that feeling."

It's a feeling that's becoming all too familiar.

Mike Hanson with the Madison Police Department says, "Someone knows something. Someone is talking about it already and it's up to our detectives and officers working case to go and apprehend them and we're confident we will.

Zimmer just hopes justice is done, before it happens for a third time.

Police say they are still looking for any tips or witnesses that may help lead them to the two suspects.

At least the person that worked at a gas station, has/had a job for 30 years. That's more then the losers that have robbed Zimmers can say!

For anon Aug 8 at 9:02 am. You really are stupid to think that Madison Police just sit around and wait for "the perfect opportunity" to catch a criminal. Maybe you should take into consideration that there are numerous homicide cases going on. Maybe you should also consider Madison Poice prioritizes their cases from most important to the least. Robberies I would say is somewhere in the bottom half of their priorities. So before you express another one of your thoughtless comments look at situation in a realistic sense before you do so!

to:Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 8, 2008 at 12:53 PM Anyone who has had to work in Gas Stations and Liquor Stores for 30 years is a MORON!! -what a moronic thing to say...this person has at least had a job for the past 30 years. if they didnt, then you would be complaining about that! who are you to criticize ANYONE,no matter what job they hold? And if what if they are the owner??? you really need to check yourself and jump down off that soap box. with today's economy, crime is going to be on the upswing..we,those who choose to stay honest, are going to have to prepare ourselves for this nonsense. i hope they catch the two "men" and I use that word loosely, who did this and with any luck, they will not see daylight as a free person for some time. and stop blaming the police, they cant be every where at all times. they are doing what they can with what they have. why must fingers be pointed all the time? we as mature adults, sometimes just need to accept what is....life.

Wow, Anon @12:53 you are rediculous. You can not measure a person's intellegence simply by their job. Why would you EVER find it necesary to criticize someone you don't even know? It is also rediculous how everyone as gotten off of the topic at hand which is the robbery.

Spelling, punctuation, acronyms - that's not the point here! The point is that there are plenty of losers out there that instead of working like the rest of us, feel they have the right to steal.

I'm sorry, I did not know that "liquor store[s] and the likes never have any money in the register." I guess that only comes to mind when you are discussing robberies or the odds of being successful in an attempt. I think that Madison should adopt the same methods that are being used up north to apprehend dangerous criminals. The suspect flees into the woods, (or a certain part of town), the area is flooded with law enforcement from everywhere, the suspects are apprehended. Why is using a weapon a crime up north and just an "observation" in Madison? Don't we deserve the same protection here? The police know where these criminals are. They are just waiting to catch them at a traffic light or something. It is not a big deal in Madison if they shoot up a few people before they get caught. Or maybe it is because they are black, running loose in a black neighborhood that the police don't care. Good ol' Madtown!

People who can't type out the word "you" or use capital letters at the beginning of a sentence are the ones who need a life.

When are these people going to get real jobs instead of leading a life of crime? Firing squads anyone?

Surprised: Thank you for bringing that to my attention! I'm sorry I let that slip!
