More than Two Dozen Horses Killed in Barn Fire

UPDATED Wednesday, November 24, 2010 -- 4:45 p.m.
By NBC15's Dana Brueck

In Rock County, a barn fire has devastated a horse rescue. The operators say more than two dozen horses died.

Footville firefighters got the call around 8:45 Wednesday morning to the property on Old Highway 11.

"I didn't realize how much it hit me until I walked back in there again, and it's pretty bad."

Inside of Jim Bondowski's shell of a barn rest the remains of more than two dozen of his horses that were rescued by Bondowski and his wife.

"I heard a couple of popping sounds ... with deer hunters been hunting out there."

"I looked outside... I seen the horses running... and I could see black smoke ... and flames out of corner of building."

Bondowski rushed to save his animals but was overcome by the smoke and flames.

"I could not see ... I could hear horses screaming, hollering... to get out ... and I ran to the closest one where the fire was... and I got her out and kept going and going."

"As soon as we opened the doors, the flames with the oxygen... the total barn went," he says.

The fire consumed everything Bondowski says he needs to operate the horse rescue.

He still has more than a dozen horses who were outside when the fire erupted.

"Hay's gone, grain's gone... halters gone... blankets burned ... medicine... dewormers... everything."

Firefighters believe a faulty heater or an electrical problem caused the fire. They do not think it's suspicious.

The Bondowskis need the following supplies: blankets, halters, lead ropes, hay, grain, bedding, grooming equipment, OTC vet supplies, heated and regular water pails, barn shovels, hay forks, 3 electric fencers and materials, dewormers, wheelbarrow for manure, hay bags, wall and corner feeders, saddles, bridles, pads, harnesses, and cat supplies

A fund also is being set up for H.O.R.S.E. That's the name of the organization.
It's at M&I bank in Janesville.

Apparently they are too cheap to hire a rendering service to haul the dead horses away. The fact that your everyday local farmer has to call one is above them.... Maybe they expect everyone to bow down to them.

It is virtuous to seek the truth. It is also wise not to enable obvious hoarders (60 horses on under 3 acres of land with only a few "available" for adoption = hoarding) and to encourage these people to get on some sort of firm legal ground to operate a true horse rescue first and then accumulate horses later....

it is always virtuous to seek the truth. however, those questioning the truth might well do so while not further victimizing those already victimized. i believe the facts listed herein, and know some of the folks who unselfishly stepped up to the plate to move the surviving horses;and w/ no public recognitions on some blog. and further, even if these folks did file a BK, is it any wonder? my husband and i go w/out many creature comforts so we may keep the horses we have rescued. wonder what you've sacrificed for others, horses or humans alike? never mind, that answer is abundantly clear...

To Random- My husband and I were out there yesterday, giving supplies. These ppl rent this, so would have no benefit in causes the fire. Yes, they removed bodies and they are there, in back, till they can find a burial place for them.

Can anyone confirm?? I've heard some disturbing news that the fire was suspicious. Bankruptcy had just been filed before the fire started, and this is the 3rd in 1 year on this property. Is there any truth to this rumor? There is also hear-say that no horses were lost in the fire, and there was no supplies/tack in the barn either. Noone has seen/removed any dead horses off the property. Please don't "bash me" for posting this....just looking for the truth.

Please look at comment by Gayle in KS, this is a problem, people think extension cords can be used in barns for heaters, or fans, indefinitely and that is such a huge mistake, they are ONLY temporary and they are not to be used in this manner, they over heat and cause fires. Please note this all of you reading that in the future DO NOT use extension cords in this manner as you can see it is dangerous and deadly, and could avoid such a tragedy! very sad

Our horse club, Sugar River Horsin Around Club will be donating item this weekend, $ and items. We have 50 people in our club and I expect each and every one of us to donate a few items. Our club will be sending a check to the bank in Janesville. I know all rescues are usually scraping by because of the high number of horses that are in need of a new home. We are so sad to hear of this rescue's loss, very heartbreaking.

My heart goes out to you for all you did so save the horses, & then to hear about this, just breaks my heart. A candle is being lit in STL for the spirit of the horses, to help find their way.
