UPDATED Monday, August 18 --- 4:25pm

From the Columbia County Sheriff's Office:

On August 17, 2008, at 8:01pm, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a gas drive off that occurred at a convenience store located on STH 16 in the Village of Rio. A Sheriff’s Deputy responding to the call met an oncoming vehicle that matched the description of the suspect vehicle involved in the gas drive off. The suspect vehicle, a 1976 Ford Ranchero, had a 4-wheel ATV in the bed of the pick up truck.

The Sheriff’s Deputy pursued after the suspect vehicle through the City of Portage and west on STH 16 towards Wisconsin Dells. The suspect vehicle was traveling at 90 mph in a 35 mph zone in the City of Portage. The suspect vehicle made a series of turns onto town roads leading back to STH 127 towards the City of Portage. While the suspect vehicle was traveling on rough roads at speeds around 100 mph the ATV that was in the bed of the pick up truck became airborne and bounced over the top of one of the Sheriff’s patrol cars. The Portage Police Department deployed tire deflation devices (road spikes) on STH 127 near Columbia Correctional Institution. The suspect vehicle then drove the wrong way on the off ramp from I-39 to STH 16. The suspect vehicle narrowly missed a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer unit. A Sheriff’s Deputy executed a Pursuit Intervention Technique which is commonly known as PIT maneuver. This caused the suspect vehicle to spin off of the roadway and into the ditch. At that time the suspect exited his vehicle and fled on foot. A grounds search was conducted in the Portage Industrial Park by Columbia Correctional Institution. Law enforcement was unable to locate the suspect at that time.

This pursuit covered 35.5 miles and lasted over 27 minutes long.

On August 18, 2008, at 6:37am, a Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop a construction pick up truck that was traveling west on STH 16 at Lewiston Station Road at a speed of 89 mph. The pick up truck was stolen from a construction site in the City of Portage just shortly before the high speed pursuit began. The suspect vehicle attempted to turn north onto New Haven Road however the vehicle entered the ditch and overturned. The driver crawled out of the overturned vehicle and fled on foot. A perimeter was immediately established to contain the suspect. A Sheriff’s Deputy and his K-9 partner were able to track the suspect who was found hiding in some heavy foliage. The suspect received minor injuries as a result of the apprehension by the K-9. The suspect continued to resist apprehension and was subdued by the deployment of a Taser. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to Divine Savior Hospital. The suspect was treated and has been incarcerated at the Columbia County Jail.

The suspect has been identified as ANDREW GRAY SWITZER, age 17, of Bloomington, IN. SWITZER was listed as a wanted person out of Monroe County, Indiana.

SWITZER will tentatively make his initial appearance in Columbia County on Tuesday. Switzer is presently being held in the Columbia County Jail on various felony charges related to the high speed chase, operating a motor vehicle without owner’s consent, no valid driver’s license, and various traffic violations. Additional theft charges are being investigated.

The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Portage Police Department, the Portage Fire Department, the Wisconsin Dells Police Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Dells-Delton Ambulance Service.

You know people you judge way to quickly! Don't you people think before you open mouths! He is a kid that got in to trouble yeah it was really really wrong, but he is a troubled kid in desperate need of help. If you do not have something nice to say then keep your mouth shut! come on people think of the family that might be reading this.

Hey! All you blooming ton IN people who knew this kid- why did he come to WI anyway?

Posted by: Jasmine on Aug 21, 2008 at 08:46 AM
Too bad the sucker didn't either die in the crashes of those vehicles, or the cops didn't shoot him, or the dog didn't eat him, or some sloppy doctor at divine failure hospital mess him up- sure would have cured any mental problems he had if he was dead! would also cut down on the prison population in either/ both states, free up some time in the court system, to make room for more likely candidates for successful rehabilitation into a normal productive life! Good Lord, if he is this big of a waste of human flesh at 17, think of what kind of loser oxygen theif he would be at 25 or 30!

TO anon 8/19@ 334pm, Did life have any meaning to this guy? I don't think so! He risked the lives of innocent people during this bout of stupidity and he risked the lives of police, and his own loser life! I believe he was the heartless one! Come on...to cheap to buy gas? WALK! If it wasn't about the THEFT, what was it then, was he a druggie, drunk, enlighten us! You seem to know all. BTW does life have any value or meaning to you, I mean your so quick to judge others and stand up for a criminal please explain.

I agree with crystal! one way to effectively improve the chemical imbalances in a human brain is to permanantly remove the brain from its housing! Just like the state figures removing abused kids from a house perm. is helping, removing a abused brain from the abuser is safer too, right? besides, they shoot rabid dogs, so why not shoot rabid humans that pose a danger of killing someone in the community by their actions? Know what, send him back to IN for his prison/ mental help! why should WI residents pay to fix him?

Posted by: anonymous Location: madison on Aug 20, 2008 at 10:49 AM
Very confused... how do they know it is the same guy from both if they are 2 seperate incidents????

Posted by: Concerened Location: Bloomington, IN on Aug 20, 2008 at 09:26 AM
Obviously this is about much more than stealing gas. No right-minded person would take so many risks for a tank of gas. I have heard that Wisconsin has excellent mental health programs for offenders and pray that this boy gets the necessary help so he can be a contributing member of society.

Always love hearing idiots getting tasered!! Its people like that giving my generation a bad name... Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 03:34 PM If it was someone in my family, pretty sure my family would let them pay for they're mistake and not sympothize for them, they made the bed... sleep on it.

Posted by: beg2differ on Aug 20, 2008 at 06:22 AM
Does it really matter why he did it? Will that change that he put lives at risk? Anonymous Aug 19, 2008 3:34pm, take a look at the situation. We will react upon how it is presented. Maybe we don't know all of the facts. Probably don't need to, either. But, to us, we are glad he is no longer a danger to us and I hope he gets the help he needs.

Posted by: Anita Location: Madison on Aug 19, 2008 at 11:04 PM
Anonymous 8.19 3:34 - Oh, please do enlighten us oh wise one, since you obviously think you have all the facts and answers- his original crime in the state of wisconsin was stealing gas, then a high speed chase, etc. so how is this not about stealing gas? Had he not stolen the gas, he would have never been noticed by the police! so, please share you all infinite wisdom oh keeper of the secrets of the universe, shine down upon all us misinformed peoples of the NBC15 viewing area your truth and insight!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 19, 2008 at 03:34 PM
You people are so judgemental about someone's life that you don't even know. Actually it wasn't about stealing gas. But what do you care...your ready to be the judge and the jury. As for wishing someone shot to death, does life really have any meaning to you? Would that really make you feel better? I hope that nothing like this happens to someone you care about so that you would have to read and listen to how completely heartless most people will be.

Posted by: Crystal Location: Monona on Aug 18, 2008 at 06:52 PM
too bad they didn't have to shoot the creep! all the lives he put in danger, would serve him right!

Posted by: Deke Location: Madison on Aug 18, 2008 at 06:50 PM
I wondered why they didn't send out the hound last night, but hey, the hounder found him today! too bad the sucker wasn't hungry, or the punk might have not made it to the emergency room- or he would have, with a nice, big shepard bite on his throat! congrats to the Columbia County K-9 unit! good jobs guys (or girls, or whatever)! awesome when a dog gets a chance to show its stuff! I sure hope they send this little punk back to wherever he's from- why the hell should we be supporting out-of-state losers when we have a fine crop of losers born right here in Wisconsin!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 18, 2008 at 06:00 PM
So with all that had happened , does this idiot actually think he can say someone took his stuff and he's not the guy they are looking for? I wonder how much gas was stolen vs. what the outcome of everything will be.

Posted by: Barb Location: Middleton on Aug 18, 2008 at 12:41 PM
How do you know he is from that area?

Posted by: Deke Location: Madison on Aug 18, 2008 at 10:52 AM
perfect example of stupidity in action- rather than just use his energy to get where he wanted to go legally, he ripped off a business owner, endangered thousands of potential victims on his high speed getaway, broke several laws, and is now running, yes, physically running on foot to get somewhere to get away from the police! duh! if he just would have gotten up off his lazy butt and walked wherever he needed to go, it would all be over with, and none of this stuff would be showing up on his record when he gets caught! I hope they shoot him when they find him- b/c he's too stupid to be rehabilitated into something useful if he's that freaking stupid!

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 18, 2008 at 09:51 AM
If he fled on foot, that was a real high speed chase! If the police are looking for help, don't you think they should have included a description of either the man or the vehicle?
