Edgerton: A local mother says police failed her daughter and the man who killed her.

Jenny and Shaun Vordermann were found dead in their Edgerton home Monday morning, and Jenny's mom says it could have been prevented.

"Me and Jenny were very, very close," says Tina Pond. She lost her daughter and a friend when Jenny Vordermann was shot and killed by her husband Shaun, who then killed himself.

Tina says Jenny was leaving Shaun, and he repeatedly threatened suicide. Last Saturday he sent text messages to Jenny's family members, demanding to know where she was, and describing how he had built a bonfire and was burning Jenny's stuff.

"Just started tossing her stuff in, shoes go up rather fast," reads one. The messages also contained threats. "Her phone on? You talk to her? Click, click boom. All cause she won't answer her phone. Was good to know you all. Much love and peace out. Don't feel bad."

Jenny called 911 before she went home Saturday night. "My husband keeps calling me, and he's telling me he's going to kill himself and all this crazy stuff. I'm not there because I'm afraid to go there."

Edgerton Police took Shaun Vordermann to the Rock County Health Care Center for a mental evaluation.

Tina says Jenny was told Shaun would be committed and she would have plenty of time to move out. But Tina was on the phone with Jenny when Shaun showed up at 9 o clock Sunday morning.

Tina says Shaun took Jenny's keys and her car, and found his gun in the trunk of her car.

People have asked why she didn't get Jenny out that night, but Tina says they didn't think Shaun would kill her. "This happened so many times. It's just another Shaun saying, ha ha Jenny I got your keys you can't go nowhere."

Shaun and Jenny were found in their bedroom the next morning.

Tina wants to know why Shaun was released so soon, and why police didn't keep the gun, but she says Rock County and Edgerton Police won't return her calls. "I really feel that they failed Shaun. I don't think they just failed Jenny, I think they failed Shaun."

The Rock County Health Care Center has declined comment in this case. Edgerton Police Chief Tom Klubertanz will only say he supports the actions of his officers.

Friends of the family have set up a fund to help the family with funeral costs. To donate contact Chase Bank in Madison or Edgerton.

UPDATED Tuesday, August 19, 2008 --- 9:55 a.m.

EDGERTON, Wis. (AP) -- Edgerton police say the man who killed his wife before taking his own life had been taken by police to a health center after threatening suicide two days before the deaths.

Chief Tom Klubertanz says police escorted Shaun Vordermann to the Rock County Health Center Saturday night after Vordermann's wife, Jennifer, called for help because of his threats.

Jennifer Vordermann's aunt, Julie Ellingson, says Shaun Vordermann was released from the medical center after midnight on Sunday morning. Ellingson says that was much too soon.

Ellingson says the family wants answers from health care professionals about efforts taken to help Shaun Vordermann before he was released early Sunday.

Police say Shaun Vordermann killed his wife and then himself. Their bodies were discovered Monday morning.

I personaly feel that the police are not to blame. I know one of the officers in this case personaly (specificly the officer who took Shaun into custody) and I know that he did everything he possibly could. He is a good man and someone whom I look up to. It was not his fault. The fault should be the "mental health professionals", because they were the ones who released him after only a 35 MINUTE evaluation.

Why wait to move out? No one other than the family knew exactly what went on and how many times he acted "crazy" before and they didn't react in a timely manner, yet they expected police and county workers who meet Shaun for the first time to be overly alarmed? Such a sad, sad time for all involved.

Posted by: Anonymous on Aug 23, 2008 at 11:19 AM
Looks like Local Edgerton Mom failed her daughter, as did her daughter's friends and other family. But it's easier to blame the police dept and the health care center. If Jenny's own MOM didn't think Shaun would kill Jenny, why would the mental health clinic or law enforcement officers believe that Shaun was a physical threat? Tina, I'm sorry for your loss. Sympathy to Shaun's parents too. It's a shame, but blame isn't going to bring anyone back at this point.

My heart goes out to both families. Five years ago, I was in the same situation as the wife. I survived, I am not sure what prevented by husband from shooting me, but at the last second he didn't. I had the same experience with the mental health providers, however the police here did everything in their power to help me. Unfortunately, the laws of our state prevented alot of help. It is crazy that we have so many laws to prevent the mental ill, yet not enough to protect the families of the mental ill. Again, my heart goes out to all victim left behind. Please note there are alot of online support groups that are very helpful. Reach out to your family and friends. Talk about your loss. My prayers are with you as you heal.

TO WHOEVER WROTE THAT JENNI PUSHED SHAUN TO HIS LIMIT NEEDS TO BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!! THERE IS NEVER ANY EXCUSE TO MAKE IT OKAY TO KILL SOMEONE!!! THESE RUDE AND HURTFUL COMMENTS ARE SO SICKENING! A YOUNG WOMAN LOST HER LIFE FOR NO REASON, HAVE A LITTLE RESPECT! MY HEART GOES OUT TO JENNI'S FAMILY, THEY ARE GOOD PEOPLE.

The problem with these blogs, and with society for that matter- is everyone wants to blame somebody but nobody wants to take responsibility for themselves. It's always easier to bash and blame another when we should be looking in the mirror.

Jackie from whitewater- you sounded somewhat like you had a point there somewhere- could you perhaps type it in American english so the rest of us can see it too and understand what you are talking about? whatever language you typed it in somewhat resembles american english, but the words are all spelled different and stuff. thanks! amy

Mental health professional- what exactly do you do? are you a psychologist? a psychiatrist? a toilet scrubber at mendota or winnebago mental health? amaze us with your fancy letters after your name so we know it isn't LBS for "Lotsa Bull S---"! most people say "I'm a doctor, nurse, police officer, firefighter, teacher, student"... so why just settle for some non-descript title that is meaningless to the outside world? yep, we'll give you some time to make up a good story to cover yourself on that one. I'm curious to know what exactly you attribute your "professional" qualifications to? do you have an M.D., a Ph.D? what makes you the so called professional?

Posted by: Cassandra Location: fort on Aug 21, 2008 at 12:16 PM
I think it sad how a mental health professional criticizes a social worker who may, or may not, even been involved! I also agree that social workers, or psychologists can not release patients from a hospital. Finally, I wonder how many ineffectual mental health sessions he had before he snapped, like marital counseling, or sessions to deal with depression- the thought being that perhaps this could have been stopped a long time ago since people who either knew him or are related to him say he was screwed up for a long time before this, but what help did he get from the mental health field? Or didn't he because there is no help available for people without insurance in a meantal health office, but the emergency rooms take everybody, insured or not, which may be why he ended up there instead of some on-call service location of a mental health "professional". Mental health pros, how many patients have you treated for free in the past 12 months? how about in the past week?

I wanted to find out further information on this terrible tradegy because a great friend of ours knows the father of the girl. I'm not really understanding why NBC 15 even has the option to add comments. Not necessesary & EXREMELY disrepectful to the families involved. I think this should be eliminated. Just report the facts & let it be.

ok Anonymous go ahead hide behind this name, you should be ashamed of yourself. Throwing dirt in the faces of jenny's family. I be this makes you feel good. you are sick. Keep your opinions to yourself. Their is no justification for what Shaun did, period.

I am truly sorry for both these families with their losses. I believe since knowing the couple a bit that Jenni pushed Shaun to his limit. She was always running around on him and I think that he literally just snapped because of it. It is a very sad situation and my heart goes out to both families.

Posted by: Rodney Location: Madison on Aug 21, 2008 at 09:31 AM
It's a conspiracy! See, the hospital didn't want to keep him b/c they are in league w/ doyle, and since his budget shortfall put some doubt into his administration's ability to properly anticipate economic changes and since the "hospital tax" never got passed by the state senate or doyle, the hospitals know that medicaid money is drying up, so they refuse to keep uninsured or underinsured people, and now doyle can turn to the feds and say "if we would have had money to keep this guy in the hospital for a day or two, then this may not have happened", so the feds will have to choke up some $$ to keep the dismal state of WI medical assist program from hitting nat'l news! And, since bush is a republican, doyle a democrat, and bush is on his way out, they have it so whoever the new prez is will be able to "fix it right up" when he gets in office! that's why they don't want universal health care prog- b/c everyone would have to share responsibility for this b/c treatment=$$$!

L- how do you figure they need a thicker skin? seems to me all they were doing was explaining to a so called professional what their own job description was to help them understand they were mistaken about what they do in the hospital. So how do you figure that makes them "thin skinned"?

Merely threatening to kill oneself is not grounds for emergency detention/72hr hold. There is specific criteria set forth in WI State Statute Chapter 51 on emergency detentions. A law enforcement officer cannot place you under an emergency detention because someone told LEO that you said you wanted to kill yourself. LEOs MUST follow the law. Some of you should work to CHANGE that statute (which takes away individual civil liberties, by the way) instead of placing blame. It's a terribly unfortunate incident, no doubt. But stop the blame game and get on the bandwagon so MH parity is passed and stigma against MH is reduced. http://nxt.legis.state.wi.us/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=default.htm&d=stats&jd=ch.%2051 http://nxt.legis.state.wi.us/nxt/gateway.dll?f=templates&fn=default.htm&d=stats&jd=51.15 http://www.wicourts.gov/circuit/ccform.jsp?FormName=&FormNumber=&beg_date=&end_date=&StatuteCite=&Category=24

Unfortunately it is you who has your facts misconstrued. I'm not at all in agreement with how the system works, I'm simply telling it like it is- period. (PS: Psychologists are not MDs, by the way). Our mental health system nationwide is severely flawed, WI is horrible also but better than some states. Been doing this a long time, I know how it works. You'll know too when you've been out in the field for decades (although hopefully the MH services & access situation will change in the near future. I will continue to advocate at the state level for that change). See http://www.uwsp.edu/conted/conferences/substanceabuse/default.aspx I'll be there, Social Work Grad, will you? Do you make a difference??

As aperson who has had ifrst hand experience with both the Edgerton PD and the mental health services in WI and IL, the professional who explained it is eaxctly right! I recently had a call at 2 in the morning from IL because someone who was unstable made a comment to their therapist about harming me, which required them to a min 72 hour hold unlike here. On the WI side, I recieved a call from a person in Edgerton saying they were going to kill themselves, went to that place, called in the PD for help, their response - throw on the handcuffs and put him in lockup overnight! I feel truly bad for any and all who have to go through this, it is not a pleasent experience.

My heart breaks for Jenny's family and friends. There is nothing more painful then the loss of a loved one. My thoughts and prayers go out to this family. I am also so angry because this could have been avoided if authorities would have dealt with this correctly. The family deserves answers from authorities. I hope the family can find comfort knowing that many people that do not know this family are thinking and praying for you and are hearts are breaking for you. opeace and comfort be with you.

Mental Hlth Pro- look up Wisconsin LCSW on the web, or DHFS Lic. & cert. site- Licensed Clinical Social Workers must accrue 3000 hours of supervised clinical experience w/in 2 yrs, & 1000 must be face to face contact w/ patients. Furthermore, why call a psychiatrist & not a psychologist? certainly suicide hotlines are not staffed by psychiatrists! please check your facts more closely before publicly demeaning another profession in the way you have- it is opinions/ comments like that which make interdisciplinary team participation undesirable when such falacies are repeated. furthermore- a social worker can not discharge a medical patient, an M.D. has to sign off on it, so you are incorrect in that aspect too- social workers can make recommendations to the physician, but have no control over who stays or goes from the hospital! where did you get your information anyway? you know a place that let a SW discharge a pt. Where did you see that happen? Soc. wrkrs do more than just ask 1 ?

Hey 7:04p.m. Professional? no you are not! You are a perfect example of which side of the table people like you should really be on. If people pose a risk , usually they can be detained up to 72 hours moron! In addition if there are weapons in the home and they are the home owner, they can may be ordered to surrender them as well. A perfect example of someone falling through the crack more than once on the same incident. And you're a professional? LOL!! I am laughing out loud you complete fool! Kindly do the public a favor a reserve a bed for yourself. You need it more than anybody at this point. Last but not least in a crisis such as this, explain to me in detail, where the heck does insurance come into play? In a crisis, thats the last thing they worry about. And YOU! of all people being a professional that YOU say YOU are should be well aware of that simple fact.

shame he had to take her- but awfully nice of him to save the tax payer's money by not making us throw his a** in jail for the rest of his life! nobody just "flips"- you choose to react to situations in the way you do... so he chose to behave like this, and behave like he did Saturday night- maybe he wanted sympathy, maybe he wanted her to show she still cared... whatever, we'll never know unless he left a note.

It's nearly impossible to garner a Ch 51 comittment (against one's will) in this state. When a person enters an emergency room facility at the hospital with suicidal ideation, the on call social worker is summoned to interview the patient, not a psychiatrist. There is usually a significant wait until this on call person arrives. The social worker makes the determination whether or not the person poses serious risk to oneself, oftentimes by merely asking the person if they intend to harm themselves or not. It's that simple. There may be a referral for a follow up outpatient visit-which can take WEEKS. Until this state takes mental health seriously and passes Mental Health Parity law, insurance companies will continue to provide only the required $6500/yr of coverage. Not withstanding, providers (particularly child & adolescent MH providers) are few and far between-literally parents are driving hundreds of miles to get treatment..top it off with a severe shortage of Psych beds...

I'm related to Shawn and I've never seen or heard of any sort of mental issues in regards to him. Obviously something triggered him and I think it's a bit rude to call him 'crazy'. Something went terribly wrong, and our side of the family is just as shocked and saddened as Jennifer's.

anon 8/18 3:50 where do you get looney bin? the stories (all of them) say health center, not mental hospital or asylum! any other facts you decided to make up, like maybe you knew them? if you knew them so well, why aren't you putting your name out here so his parents can see who is calling their son insane, or crazy, or looney? easy to insult people, even dead people, when you're so chicken you won't use your name! yeah, OK- you know so much you know they went to a looney bin while all the journalists who double check facts say medical or health center- and you say you knew them both- whatever. the pathetic attempt of a true loser to get situations all stirred up b/c they have nothing better to do than pretend they're important in some way to the story! such a compassionate person- calling it a looney bin. what, are you about 12? thanks for insulting everyone w/ mental illness by calling them loonies! loser! BTW- if you knew him so well, why didn't you go take care of the dogs?

anon 8/18 5:19- No, nbc15 shouldn't allow anonymous postings! if you aren't man (or woman) enough to put your name on what you post, and are going to say how everyone else should act, or feel, or think, or interpret, or understand, or realize, or comprehend, or absorb, or retain, or believe... well, forget it! No sale! I call BS! in this electronic world, if families aren't smart enough to realize what gets said on these stories, yet is smart enough to find their way here, then it is like watching TV- don't like the sex in the story you're watching, change the channel, don't like what you're reading, go away and don't visit this story again. It is your own morbid curiousity to see what depths you can be offended that brings you back, so if you're that offended, don't come back! yes, it is sad two people died. there is no way that you can sit there and regulate what people are going to say about it, so get over yourself already- you're being a Brett F.! its gotta be your way only, huh

Posted by: confused on Aug 19, 2008 at 02:50 PM
why the hell would they release someone around midnight? It sounds like there were numerous ways this could have been avoided besides additional medical attention. like if she felt uncomfortable with the gun there, why didn't she just put it somewhere else or something? i dont' mean no disrespect but these kinds of situations just don't make any logical sense sometimes--especially when there are things that could have been avoided. people need to be more attentive and careful of their own personal situations.

I dont think NBC should allow comments, people are so cruel sometimes. These were two human beings who have families, friends and a community that is in shock, nobody needs to read what some people seem to think is ok. Imagine if this was your daughter, sister, aunt, friend, or your son, uncle, brother, or friend how your heart would be breaking today.
