Madison Group Wants Warnings About Eating Fish Save Email Print

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- An environmental group wants Dane County to post signs at 25 popular fishing spots warning anglers of possible health risks from eating too many fish they catch.

The Madison Environmental Justice Organization says families who regularly eat those fish may be exceeding what are considered safe levels of the toxins that build up in fish.

Group spokesman Jim Powell says many of those who eat locally caught fish are poor non-English-speaking families who fish to feed their families. He says the group's survey found that the amount of fish they eat can exceed state advisories.

The Madison-Dane County Health Department is considering a pilot program that would post advisory signs at two or three locations to see how effective they are.

it's all a county conspiracy anyway! see, the county knows the lakes are polluted, so they don't care if poor people eat the fish, b/c that will eventually make them sick, which passes the burden onto the privately owned hospitals to deal with, and since the hospitals know they'll never see a penny for taking care of these people they do less than minimal cares, so the people die, then society is happy, b/c the county isn't paying out welfare benefits, or food benefits, the hospitals aren't suffering from jammed up emer. rooms b/c these people don't have ins. so they use the E.R. like a doctor's office for every little thing, or wait until it gets so bad it is a 100K problem needing fixing! Can't you see the conspiracy machine at work here? Mayor dave is a big supporter of dirty lakes too, b/c homeless or low income people clutter up his avenue into the city! the lakes have been filthy for 25 yrs! why do you think the county/ city hasn't posted them yet? they want to kill poor people!

How will the efficacy of such a program (a few signs) be monitored??? Sheesh. It's been common knowledge for a quarter of a century now not to eat the fish caught in our local lakes. My ob/gyn ordered me to eat no locally caught fish during my pregnancy in 1983 as the mercury levels exceeded safe limits then....

So he states it's many non-speaking english people who are eating alot of fish. What language do you print the signs in? There are many different languages that can be used. Better have a BIG SIGN!

Hey... that's great! and as long as that group is non-profit, privately funded, they can spring for the signs for the 25 areas themselves, and the county can put them up! I'll be damned if my tax dollars are going to pay for signs that say "don't eat the fish out of our cruddy water b/c you may get sick" in seven different languages! freaking do gooder eco groups love spending taxpayer money! Why don't they just have their loyal concerned members stand outside at the places and warn people verbally! that way they could call a phone translator service to make sure everyone understands in the language they speak! Yep, blue green algae isn't the only scum hanging out on the lake this summer! ah, go kiss a carp, eco freaks!

Better yet, how about the Dane County area and City of Madison residents take some responsibility for the problem and clean it up? Oh wait, they're too busy blaming police for crime problems to worry about the condition of the lakes. The WI DNR has recently released a water surface report citing Dane County as having the worst surface water quality in the state. Why? Probably due to high concentrations of fertilizers (because all the folks in Madison have to have pretty lawns), and lack of responsible adults to monitor whats going in the water. Don't issue warnings about the fish! Clean up the water they swim in.

On the back of a pack of starkist tuna in water, the pouch, they have a box in the lower right corner how its approved by the american heart asoc. and its Dolphin safe. They dont tell you, you can actually get high blood pressure from too much tuna. If you think Im kidding I drive truck. Long haul, I have canned vegetables and tuna. Everyday! Tuna and Tabasco with mixed vegies stirred in a bowl. When I had to renew my medical examiners card, They said to watch my blood pressure. I weigh 160lbs. and am 5'9 and Im thinking how can I have high blood pressure with what I'm eating. It's the metal in the tuna Tim!
