A fatal crash brings to light a problem area drivers say is only getting worse.
With busy roads under construction alternative routes are overcrowded and unsafe.
It's a problem intensified by those dodging detours.
Orange, orange and more orange. It's as much a sign of summer in Southern Wisconsin as anything, detours.
Driver Mary Smith, "I don't take that one because you'd have to go all the way to the other side of Dodgeville."
Whether posted detours are the fastest option or not can be argued, but according to one sheriff their safety can not.
Iowa County Sheriff Steven Michek says, "The reason they designate that detour is because it's the safest route around that road construction."
At Iowa County road YZ the paint and debris tell a sad story. Two people were killed Tuesday morning while trying to cross Highway 18/151 and it's the third accident of the type in the last few weeks.
For every accident at the intersection there are dozens more close calls of people barely escaping injury because now more vehicles than ever are trying to cross four lanes of 65 mile per hour traffic.
Driver Christian Rodgers says, "This morning was really tough. We had lots of fog and when I pulled off to turn to come to town I just about got wiped out by a semi who didn't slow down."
Road construction on the preferred route is causing the problems and sheriff's deputies say an intersection like this is not designed for so much traffic.
That's why people should be following the posted detour. An orange sign with your safety in mind.
Many in Dodgeville argue that if you are heading to Madison taking the posted Highway 23 detour adds significant time to your trip and that's why they believe the unmarked intersection is so busy.
