Investigators are looking into what started a fire at 6520 Tottenham Road.

On Thursday, August 28, 2008 at 2:50 AM, City of Madison Firefighters responded to a structure fire at 6520 Tottenham Road. When firefighters arrived, they noticed smoke coming from the eves. Several of the occupants told the firefighters the fire was in the basement. The firefighters entered the basement and quickly extinguished the fire.

Everyone had escaped from the building with no injuries.

Thirteen occupants, some visiting from out of town, from 6520 Tottenham evacuated after hearing their smoke detectors sound. They ran to the other duplex at 6518, and pounded on the door to alert them of the fire, where five occupants safely escaped from their home.

6518 Tottenham has some smoke odor, and 6520 Tottenham suffers from fire, smoke and water damage to the basement area, along with smoke damage throughout the two story home. Damage is estimated at $10,000.

Residents of 6518 has renters insurance, residents of 6520 does not.

Red Cross assisted with temporary housing for all families.

The fire is under investigation.

What a loss for both residents. I am very glad to here that every one got out safe! It is great that one has insurance. When will people learn that they need renters insurances. I believe anyone renting out property really should inform renters on the need for insurance. We are seeing to many disasters at rental places where there is no insurance.
