According to the Wisconsin State Journal:
A second man allegedly involved in a fatal shooting in June during an attempted robbery has confessed to his role in the homicide, a Dane County prosecutor said today.
Promethius Brown, 19, of Chicago, who allegedly took part in a robbery on June 29 at the home of Marcus Hamilton that ended when Hamilton was shot to death, was arrested Sept. 24 in Chicago. He made his initial appearance in Dane County Circuit Court on today.
Court Commissioner Daniel Floeter set bail for Brown at $500,000, the same bail set in August for Amir Furlow, 19, also of Chicago, who was the alleged trigger man in Hamilton's death.
Furlow was ordered to stand trial last month on charges of first-degree intentional homicide, felony murder and armed robbery after testimony from several people at a preliminary hearing including Artis Furlow, 29, who is a cousin to both Amir Furlow and to Brown.
Assistant District Attorney Mike Verveer said that police, with the help of the Great Lakes Fugitive Task Force, have been trying to find Brown since he fled Madison after Hamilton's death. At one point, he said, police had a tentative deal with Brown's family in which he would have turned himself in. Instead, Verveer said, an informant in Chicago told police where to find him.
"The bottom line is the defendant had plenty of time to turn himself in," Verveer said. "He knew he was charged, he knew he was wanted, and he didn't."
Brown has also confessed to his involvement in the shooting, Verveer said, adding that police have a strong case against him.
Assistant Public Defender Svetlana Taylor, appearing with Brown, said she does not know anything about the strength of the confession. When Brown had left town, she said, he was not fleeing but going home to Chicago, where he has two small children and works in construction.
A criminal complaint charges that Furlow and Brown went to Hamilton's Tempe Drive apartment to rob him and that Furlow shot Hamilton, 30, when he thought Hamilton was reaching for a weapon.
Brown is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday.
