SAFETY TIPS:
Halloween is another opportunity for us to practice good-sense safety. Every year children and adults are hurt during Halloween in preventable accidents. Sheriff Spoden wants to remind us all that following simple keys, such as looking both ways before crossing streets and driving defensively, will help make this holiday safer for all of us. The following is a list of basic tips for making your Halloween safer.
• Many communities have official times for trick or treating. Check to see the times in your area and make your plans accordingly.
• Choose a safe costume. A good costume is highly visible and flame retardant. Ensure masks allow for good peripheral vision. Avoid costumes that drag or can be tripped over. Wear comfortable shoes even if it doesn’t match the costume. Props, such as knives or pitchforks should be smooth and flexible enough not to cause injury if fallen on. Remember that falls are a leading cause of injuries among children on Halloween.
• Bring a flashlight and a cell-phone. If your flashlight stops working, the illuminated display on your phone can be used to help light your path.
• Obey traffic signals and stay on sidewalks. Don't cut across yards or driveways. If there are no sidewalks remember to walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. This way you can see traffic coming. It’s not just good sense; it’s also the law.
• Although tampering is rare, all candy should be inspected before being eaten. A fun Halloween dinner can help ensure collected candy is not eaten before being checked for safety. Remember: when in doubt, throw it out.
• An adult should accompany all children, regardless of age. Make sure your children know how to get help if they become lost. For younger children, place a laminated card with emergency contact information in their shoes or costume. Make sure your child knows that if they are lost to tell Deputies where this card is.
