SAFETY TIPS:
Halloween is another opportunity for us to practice good-sense safety. Every year children and adults are hurt during Halloween in preventable accidents. Sheriff Spoden wants to remind us all that following simple keys, such as looking both ways before crossing streets and driving defensively, will help make this holiday safer for all of us. The following is a list of basic tips for making your Halloween safer.

• Many communities have official times for trick or treating. Check to see the times in your area and make your plans accordingly.

• Choose a safe costume. A good costume is highly visible and flame retardant. Ensure masks allow for good peripheral vision. Avoid costumes that drag or can be tripped over. Wear comfortable shoes even if it doesn’t match the costume. Props, such as knives or pitchforks should be smooth and flexible enough not to cause injury if fallen on. Remember that falls are a leading cause of injuries among children on Halloween.

• Bring a flashlight and a cell-phone. If your flashlight stops working, the illuminated display on your phone can be used to help light your path.

• Obey traffic signals and stay on sidewalks. Don't cut across yards or driveways. If there are no sidewalks remember to walk on the left side of the road facing traffic. This way you can see traffic coming. It’s not just good sense; it’s also the law.

• Although tampering is rare, all candy should be inspected before being eaten. A fun Halloween dinner can help ensure collected candy is not eaten before being checked for safety. Remember: when in doubt, throw it out.

• An adult should accompany all children, regardless of age. Make sure your children know how to get help if they become lost. For younger children, place a laminated card with emergency contact information in their shoes or costume. Make sure your child knows that if they are lost to tell Deputies where this card is.

Does anyone know when Rio holds their trick or treating?

This board is hilarious. There hasn't been an actual incident reported of tainted candy in 20 years. That's in the entire country. It's the constant stream of fear that people keep buying into. Everyone's got to relax a little bit. It's not as scary out there as everyone seems to think. And what's the problem with christmas decorations up early at Kohls. Get over it. If they want to take up space with stuff they think will sell, then they can do that.

Posted by: Dawn Location: DeForest on Oct 31, 2008 at 06:17 AM
What time is trick or treating in DeForest ?

Posted by: annon Location: oregon on Oct 29, 2008 at 07:42 PM
Treat or treating has been around for years so I agree with annon @ 9:32am...whats the big deal? Take your kids to neighborhoods you know and check their candy when you get home...throw away anything that looks tampered with. The fun with Halloween IS going door to door for candy! Happy Halloween everyone!

Posted by: Melissa Location: Baraboo on Oct 29, 2008 at 12:34 PM
What do you mean trick or treating is not what it used to be anon?!?! There has always been danger and there will always be danger. But why should we let criminals win and make our children hide indoors on this festive night of fun? Us as parents need to be alert and teach our kids how to be safe and stay safe and also to enjoy the night. Be sure to check all candy before giving to your child!! And have a safe and happy halloween everyone!!!

Posted by: anonymous Location: Cambridge on Oct 28, 2008 at 09:16 AM
Cambridge Trick or Treating is 5-7pm

Posted by: anonymous Location: bootown on Oct 27, 2008 at 09:32 AM
whats the big deal about kids knocking on strangers doors I mean its not 100 percent safe but if there parents are with and watching or going up to the door with them there shouldnt be much of a problem....kids that are to old to have there parents go with them shouldnt be trick or treating anyways...

Posted by: Robert Location: Shorewood Hills on Oct 25, 2008 at 11:30 AM
I agree, you'd be stupid to allow your kids to take candy from strangers. Surely the schools could do something to provide a safe environment rather than have kids knocking on strangers door and begging for candy.

De Forest High School trick or treating is on Wednesday night.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Madison on Oct 23, 2008 at 12:00 PM
Halloween is not what it used to be. Kids being encouraged to knock on strangers doors and begging for Candy should stop.

Why isn't trick-or-treating allowed in Beloit? I enjoy seeing the little ones and I've already spent hard earned money on candy to give to them.

Posted by: Why o why on Oct 1, 2008 at 03:29 PM
It's October 1, yes FIRST, for heaven's sake. Is this really necessary a month ahead of time? I saw Christmas decorations at Kohls last night too. Our society just needs to slow down.
