October 14, 2008 --- 10:30 a.m.

On Monday at 9:43 p.m. the Green County Sheriff's Department Communication Center received a wireless 911 call reporting a vehicle crash in Decatur Township approximately one-quarter mile west of Brodhead on Decatur Road.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a passenger car was traveling eastbound on Decatur Road when the driver lost control, driving off the road and struck a tree. The driver, identified as Ryan D. Strommen, age 19, of Brodhead, was not wearing a seatbelt. Speed is a contributing factor.

Strommen was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was killed as a result of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Green County Coroner's Office. The crash remains under investigation.

An autopsy will be performed to determine if the driver had a medical condition that may have contributed to the crash.

anon on Oct. 15 @ 8:12- you should be grateful that Deke thought to point out how a sad loss could be a good thing. But, I suppose you're someone who thinks it is nobody's business how you choose to drive, and feel pressured to slam Deke because without even knowing you, he called you on your own behavior, and now you feel guilty that that lesson didn't occur to you, perhaps someone who thought of this kid as a friend, a relative... so sad how nasty you get over someone doing something nice to lend meaning to a tragic accident, you sorry angry little person.

This sounds way too familiar. My nephew died as a result of a one car accident in August. He also hit a tree. Speed was a factor, but what they don't say is that the speed was a result of falling asleep at the wheel. Why was he tired? Working way too many hours. When are employers, especially those who value safety, require employees to work so many hours? When are employers going to learn that we are people and not machines?

How terribly sad that once again, it works out to be too much power, too little common sense. another life snuffed out way too early because a heavy foot, and perhaps some other reason, but confirmed that speed was a factor... how sad. one of the most loving things his friends could do would be to learn that speed kills, so don't do it. if you ever want to honor your friend, remember him every time your speedometer goes a mile an hour over the posted limit. that would be his most fitting legacy he could leave behind-to save one more life that doesn't need to be ended so quickly due to speeding!
