Release from the Governor's Office:

MADISON – Governor Jim Doyle announced today the state’s Sex Offender Registry Web site now offers a mapping feature as well as an e-mail notification system for residents through collaboration with Family Watchdog.

“Thousands of parents, grandparents and neighbors have looked to our Sex Offender Registry Web site for information about sex offenders who reside in their communities, and our new mapping and electronic notification features will equip users with more information than ever to keep their children and loved ones safe,” Department of Corrections Secretary Rick Raemisch said. “We are pleased to be partnering with Family Watchdog to provide these new options for the public to stay safe.”

The new features are the latest enhancements to the Sex Offender Registry Web site under Governor Doyle’s Sex Offender Apprehension and Felony Enforcement (SAFE) Initiative, an agenda launched in 2005 to hold sex offenders accountable and to prevent them from becoming anonymous in Wisconsin communities.

Under an agreement with the non-profit Family Watchdog, users of the state’s Sex Offender Registry Web site at www.WIDOCOffenders.org can link directly to www.FamilyWatchdog.us, where they can map the location of sex offenders within a certain distance from their homes or other locations. In addition, Wisconsin users can enroll in Family Watchdog’s automatic e-mail notification system, which will send enrollees a notice when the registry is updated with new information about a sex offender’s move to a particular neighborhood. As part of the agreement, Family Watchdog will receive Wisconsin’s registry data daily, so map and email notification information will be as current as the Sex Offender Registry Web site.

“Family Watchdog is happy to partner with the state of Wisconsin,” said Steve Roddel, President and CEO of Family Watchdog. “Our service is trusted by millions of Americans because of its simple, easy-to-use interface and because we keep our data as current as possible. This partnership enhances both of these features and provides a better solution to Wisconsin residents seeking to find registered sex offenders nearby.”

You need to be cautious about everyone Kelli, because only a fraction of sex crimes are ever reported or the perps caught. So watch out for the people on the registry, but don't be naive. Not to mention how many people lie about where they are living or don't update with the registry. Nobody is ever 100% safe, and there is nothing you can do but use your common sense. BTW- I am a liberal, and believe that sexual predators (such as the ones who prey on children) should have life sentences, but they are still human. They are tricky and deceitful, and knowing where they supposedly live is just not enough. I am all for a special place for them free of temptation- prison. It is the compassionate thing to do- protect all children from known abusers and relieve the abusers of the temptation to commit more sex crimes. And you can see on the registry what sort of crime was committed and if it involved a minor, etc.

Still human beings? Have compassion for them? Get real! They (the ones that prey on children) are nothing more than animals. It has been said time and time again that pedophiles cannot be rehabilitated, and will likely prey on the young when they are released into the general public. You want me to feel compassion? I am all for sending them to the moon or any other place that will be way out of the public's reach for these loser's. They are human? PLEASE! A human would not rape young children or use them for their perverted pleasure. Freaking bleeding heart liberals have your heads so far up your bottom that you will never see daylight! Compassion indeed! How would you feel if it were YOUR child that was taken advantage of? Would you feel compassion?

kelli.. why dont you just board yourself up in your house... would that protect you? no.. they are out there, this site is to let us know where they live, not to demoralize them... I'm happy to know where they live to not walk past or let my kids be alone near the houses... it sounds like if it were up to you we should send them all to the moon and isolate them... have some compassion for another human, Im not saying I support them, I dont, but they are still human.

too bad they aren't willing to permanently tag them like animals so people could keep track of them wherever they go, and concerned people could carry "buzzers" which would start to buzz and vibrate every time one of those creeps came within 100 feet, so decent people wouldn't have to watch everybody, just the sex fiends that tripped the buzzers! It is not discrimination- sex offenders view the public as either enemies, or prey- and their attacks are personal, violent, meant to overpower another person. Too bad our infamous lawmakers never got the chance to experience it first hand, to feel helpless, violated. I bet laws would be a hell of a lot tougher if it was them, or their families!
