BARABOO, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities say a woman from Ukraine who was living and working in the Sauk County area was found dead Wednesday in her submerged car in the Baraboo River.

Officials said a man who lived with the woman told authorities she left home Tuesday morning to go shopping in Baraboo and never returned. After finding tire skids along a highway in the town of Fairfield, he notified authorities there might have been an accident.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Chip Meister said skid marks indicated the woman's car left the road and she overcorrected, sending the vehicle across the road, through some woods and into the river. Divers found the body.

Coroner Betty Hinze said the woman was from Ukraine and was staying and working in the area.

The woman has been identified as 21-year-old Iana Sheremeta of Baraboo, WI.

Divers find a woman inside a submerged vehicle in the Baraboo River.

The Sauk County Sheriff's Department says a man called the department this morning after his girlfriend borrowed his truck Tuesday, but never returned.

The man said he found parts of the vehicle, and feared his girlfriend may have been in an accident.

Officials searched the area on County Trunk U about 1/4 mile north of Highway 33, in the Township of Fairfield.

Deputies believe the car left the roadway, struck several trees and landed in the Baraboo River.

The Sauk County Dive & Rescue Team found the submerged vehicle. A diver was able to determine there was one woman inside the vehicle.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released.
