From the Dane County Sheriff's Department:

At 5:18 am, a Dane County Sheriff's Deputy was assisting a tow truck operator, who was pulling a car from the median on USH 18/151, when the squad was struck from behind by an eastbound semi-tractor and trailer, 1/10 of a mile west of CTH E in the Town of Blue Mounds.

The deputy had just gotten back into the squad car, with the emergency lights fully operating, when the semi jack-knifed and the trailer struck the rear of the squad.

Mount Horeb Police Department and Mount Horeb EMS responded to render aid to the deputy, who suffered non-life threatening injuries. The deputy was transported to an area hospital for treatment. The driver of the semi, Stanley D. Borchardt, age 60 of Dayton, IA, was not injured.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office Crash Reconstructionists were called in to assist in the crash investigation. The crash investigation is on-going at this time.

this deputy, a sibling of mine, endured their worst nightmare, getting hit by a semi,(but surving). The incident two years ago was a driver that did not have a license and had never driven in the snow. The Deputy was hit from behind, while walking back to the squad car. The Deputies head went through the back windshield of the other persons vehicle, shattering the windshield. The glass from that flew into the Deputies eye, completely ripping the retina off the eye. The Deputy flipped off the car that hit the Deputy and landed underneath the squad car with the radio having slid somewhere. The indivial that caused the incident received a slap on the hand. That's giving anyone permission to drive in unsafe situations, using poor judgement and putting many lives in danger. This person willingly goes back to work to help people and keep them safe, knowing the risks are out there. I'm very proud of my sibling for always putting other people first and never asks for anything in return.
