FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- Investigators say a fatal fire at a Fond du Lac apartment building most likely started on the kitchen stove in the victim's unit.
State fire marshal investigators along with local police and fire officials have completed their preliminary work into the cause of this morning's fire.
The victim is believed to be a 21-year-old man. His mother, who shares an apartment with him, was injured. She told investigators she awoke to heavy smoke and saw the stove area on fire. She was treated at a local hospital after escaping.
The fire displaced more than 30 others who lived in the 16-unit apartment building.

UPDATED Wednesday, December 31, 2008 --- 9:55 a.m.
FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) -- One person died and several others were rescued from second-floor balconies when fire broke out in a Fond du Lac apartment building early Wednesday.
Firefighters were called to the Briar Crest Apartments about 5 a.m. More than 30 residents escaped the 16-unit building.
Battalion Chief John Duffy says three people who couldn't escape through the building's hallways were found on their balconies. Firefighters also discovered a body on the first floor of the building.
Duffy says a water main break and frigid temperatures made fighting the fire difficult.
The Humane Society was called to the scene to gather pets that had not died in the fire.
