From the Dane County Sheriff's Department:

Madison, WI. January 5, 2009 – Friday, January 2nd marked the first night of the Dane County Traffic Teams overtime OWI enforcement. Just shortly after 10:00 pm, a deputy stopped Hilario A. Estrada, age 29 of Madison. Estrada was traveling at 102 mph on the westbound beltline near Rimrock Road. He was cited for OWI, speeding, no driver’s license, and open intoxicants.

Dane County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested four drivers on New Year’s Eve night for Operating While Intoxicated. For all four motorists it was their 1st Offense.

Two of the arrests were preceded by crashes, one on Mineral Point Road and Camel Hill Road in the town of Cross Plains, and the other on STH 78 in the town of Vermont. No serious injuries resulted from either crash.

In addition to OWI citations on New Year’s Eve, Sheriff’s deputies shut down two juvenile alcohol parties. At an address on CTH N in the town of Sun Prairie, thirteen underage alcohol citations were issued. At a second address on Town Hall Road in the town of Springfield, deputies were able to interrupt the party just as it was getting started, so no citations were issued.

Who care's who does the arresting? The fact of the matter is that, they are getting drunks off the streets. Name any organization anywhere where every member does the same amount of work. People around here rip on the MPD more than anything. It starts much higher with stricter laws for first-time offenders so they don't consider even committing a crime. I swear everyone around here thinks that there should be a cop on every corner. Celebrate the fact that more drunks are off the road and leave it at that. I'm sure someone was working and doing their job at the time you posted your comments.

As someone who's done ride-a-longs in just about all the major departments in Dane County, I wonder why there are never any press releases from the University Police. When I rode with them, they seemed to get lots of drunk drivers off the road. The officer told me it was not uncommon for them to arrest anywhere between 3-6 a weekend and that's just with three officers. I guess maybe since its not uncommon for them, its not news, but when the deputies do it, its big news. It seems like per officer the university is picking up more than anyone including MPD and the sheriff's office.
