Press Release from Cub Foods:

STILLWATER, Minn. – January 12, 2009 – Cub Foods today announced plans to close the Nakoma Cub store located at 4716 Verona Road. The store will be closed by mid March of 2009.

In light of a difficult economic environment, Cub Foods has evaluated its stores and identified opportunities to strengthen its overall business. While the decision to close a store is always difficult—given the impact on associates and customers—it is guided by what is best for the company’s ongoing success and future growth.

Cub would like to thank customers of the Nakoma store and remind them that the other Madison Cub stores located at 4141 Nakoosa Trail and 7455 Mineral Point Road are ready to serve them with the same great prices, selection and service they’ve come to expect.

Cub Foods provides consumers with the freshest produce, widest selection and greatest value available today. In addition to innovative natural, ethnic and certified organic food sections, Cub stores offer shoppers added conveniences, such as in-store pharmacy and banking. Cub Foods was established in 1968 as one of the nation’s first discount grocery stores. The organization was purchased in 1980 by SUPERVALU and currently operates 84 stores located in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio and Iowa.

I have to say I will miss this site. We bought most of our produce and meat from there. Woodmans is great but you have to use either a debit card of a check. I also think it has more to do with the fact that a Super Target and Super Wal-Mart moved into the area than anything else for why this site is closing.

This store was in a bad location from the start. Although woodmans is cheaper, cub is definitely cheaper than copps if you pay attention and i hope this helps the business of the other two stores. i hope also, that not too many employees lose their jobs! its very sad.

This closing is overdue - that parking lot was practically always empty. As far as the reporter's comments sounds like a cut and paste from cub's website (that's just lazy) Woodman's will benefit from this closing, and they deserve it. Woodman's has the best prices and they've put money back in their stores with recent remodelings. I hope all the cub employees find jobs elsewhere, that has to be tough.

I have lived in this area for nearly 20 years. I remember when the Super Saver was closed due to too much theft. I wonder if they had the same problem. Even the liquor had security tags on them.

It is a bad area i do admit and can understand why it would be closed down they are kinda pricey but if ya do the sales you can do fine, I hate to say it but i rate them better than woodmans prices. I hope the current employees will find work at the other 2 cub foods I am sure most will

I used to shop there all the time until I discovered how much cheaper Woodman's is. I know it is a pain in the butt to find parking and long lines at check out but for me the savings in price is worth the inconvenience.

Thought it was a BAD location when they built it.

Yeah, sounds like someone never shops at Cubs if he is saying they have the freshest and competative prices.

Really the widest, freshest and greatest? Was this reporting or advertising? I personally found them overpriced and less than fresh....

Awesome! I can't wait to hear from all the shoplifters with no place convenient to steal from anymore!

I'm not surprised by this news. Although I don't live near or frequent the Cub on Verona Rd, I occasionally go to the one on Mineral Point Rd, mainly to use the Redbox machine, and just happen to compare prices. They are not competitive with Woodman's on most items, and even fail to match Copp's much of the time.
