Early childhood development in Dane county -- one of many areas to see a boost in funding this year.

Some of the most pressing issues facing nearby communities will see added support after a record campaign for the United Way of Dane County. Last year's campaign recorded more than $17 million dollars from donors like you. Almost all of those dollars will go back into expanding some successful programs.

This retired moving truck has a new job -- it's used to build a brighter future for young minds.

"The Mobile Play and Learns are all about teaching the parents, or the caregivers, on how to be their children's first teacher," Deedra Atkinson with United Way says.

The truck travels to different sites daily. Lead Play and Learn Specialist Alyssa Coriell travels with it ... but she connects with those it serves.

"The majority of families that come to play and learn have no other accredited support where they're getting the information on how children learn and what they need to grow and develop," Coriell says.

The United Way of Dane County has identified the program as one for expansion. It will see a share of the organization's nearly $15 million dollars being re-invested in the community.

"We're really not interested in any more funding a program that's going to help 20 people. If 200 people need help, we really want to get into an area where we can get the support to 200 people," Atkinson says.

The United Way provides funding to about 100 agencies and some 300 programs. Others eyed as part of the organization's agenda for change -- the Madison area's two foodbanks.

"We're also working with those two foodbanks to improve the distribution of food throughout the about 45 food pantries in Dane County."

Back at Play and Learn, Coriell leads activities families also can do at home... simple activities with a lasting impact.

"I have to say I feel pretty lucky that they pay me to do this job."

The United Way's more targeted approach also addresses... tutoring and housing programs, support for caregivers and reducing the rate of recidivism.
